“Home Sweet Home”
Reviewed November 6, 2013

We flew to Lima on the 12th of October 2013. We stayed at Lima Backpackers until the 15th and returned again on the 25th of October. The stay with Marco was excellent. He is a warm and wonderful host for the hostel. He is extremely informative and helpful with any questions you may have. The beds at the hostel are extremely comfortable. The bathrooms are nice, clean and there is hot water for the showers. The hostel is located about 45 minutes from the airport in a beautiful and safe neighborhood. From the airport, the best price we could negotiate was 55 Nuevo Soles. From the hostel, I believe we paid 45 to 50 Nuevo Sole. This is a great place to stay , it really was like being at home.

I liked everything, the apartment clean, safe neighborhood and well connected.
I recommend a walk for the neighborhood.
Perfectly connected to 5 minutes from Miraflores and Barranco by taxi and 15 minutes from downtown by subway.
A 5 minute walk to the Peña del carajo (show 100% Peruvian).
But the best thing is certainly MARCO, great host, master of pisco sour and a better person.
Thanks for introducing me to the best ceviche of my life.

More than a Hostel is staying with a friend.

I stayed at Lima Backpackers for 9 nights and it was like staying at the home of an interesting, welcoming, kind (and well-organized) friend. I really appreciated the fact that it was spotlessly clean - including bathrooms, kitchen, floors, bed linens, comfy blankets. I was also provided a nice white towel, which was a bonus. I traveled around Lima by myself with virtually no Spanish and no real agenda, and it was so wonderful to return each night to the clean, tranquil and comfortable space that host/owner Marco has created. Marco is passionately interested in promoting the wonderful city of Lima, and was available to hear about the daily adventures of his guests, and to help plan itineraries, advise on places to eat the amazing cuisine of Lima, instruct guests on how to take taxis (and what to reasonably pay), how to take public transit (the Metropolitano), etc. He also accompanies guests on outings, including a wonderful walk along the seaside of the beautiful Barranco art district. On our last night Marco made me and several other guests a wonderful Pisco Sour - no charge! (I regretted not bringing Marco a bottle of ice wine from Canada, as he enjoys collecting interesting alcohol from countries around the world). I think the Lima Backpackers Hostel is a perfect spot for people interested in learning more about Lima and Peru, and interested in interacting with their fellow guests in a warm and comfortable atmosphere. It is likely not a spot for people looking to get riotously drunk and loud. It was an amazing value at roughly $10/night Canadian.

Lima itself was surprisingly wonderful. I spent a majority of my time just walking endlessly. I particularly loved the newly-restored old colonial city, including the Plaza des Armas and the Plaza San Martin. Off of the Plaza San Martin I had a (very very large) Pisco Sour in the gracious old luxury Gran Bolivar hotel (it was like being in a 1930s movie set). I particularly loved the gracious Barranco neighbourhood, which is a $3 taxi ride away from Lima Backpackers. There I spent much time walking around the arty old neighbourhood, where many artists/intellectuals and writers live, and many people have decorated there homes in artistic ways. I spent a night dancing cumbia (and a bit of salsa) there, as well as a night hearing traditional Afro-Peruvian music and watching traditional Peruvian marinera dancing at a little Pena called "La Oficina". It was like being in someone's living room - I even got invited to join a birthday party and got offered a piece of cake. I also spent a day shopping for great pima cotton tshirts and polos at one of the world's largest fabric markets - Gamarra - in the La Victoria district. La Victoria is dangerous - but if you get a cab there and back it is safe enough.

I am already planning my next trip to Lima and will stay at Lima Backpackers. My advice is go and enjoy. Lima has a somewhat bad reputation, but mostly due to the past when times were really dire. It is now enjoying a resurgence, and with sensible precautions it really is a pretty safe place to visit.

Room Tip: There are only two rooms in Lima Backpackers with 4 people in each. The rooms are a bit small, but w...

Marco place is the warmest I have ever stayed in. If you are travelling a bit and budget conscience, the cost ($10 a night I think) cannot be beat.
In july 2013 my friend and I had booked a double room - it was so cozy and clean! the bathroom was shared but CLEAN and Marco lives on site. breakfast is basic but prepared with so much love - the table is set for a real family like atmosphere. Marco gave us great tips and was up for a chat all the time - there was even a pass for the local trains there for us to borrow - great touch.
on our first night there were with some really friendly travellers from Venezuela - so marco made us all a cocktail and he joined in our sign language type chatting til past 4am; of all the 'grandness' of Lima, this was my highlight. If you are beyond crazy travel antics and 'getting off your face' - likeminded people please stay here!

I would love to see marco have some bikes for rent in the future when I stay next - because I will be sure to stay here again if I ever were to return!

I had 4 nights in Lima and stayed at Marco's for 2 simply because of the reviews. I had already booked my last 2 nights elsewhere & wish I had stayed all 4 nights with Marco.
The beds are super comfortable (one of the best during my 3 weeks in Peru), the dorm is on the smaller side, but there are lockers and enough space to move around. The showers always had hot water, but the pressure was slightly low (but by Peruvian standards, pretty good). I would have liked more shower facilities, but Marco has plans for expansion. The hostel is a little far from other tourist sites, but the bus stop is close & taxis are cheap. Breakfast was great, Marco added little things to make breakfast special.
This is Marco's home, and that feeling simply transmits into the whole experience of staying here. You are staying in a home, not a a hostel & that's why it feels great. It's easy to chat to everyone here as you hang out in the lounge sipping on Pisco Sours that Marco has toiled 1hour to make -it's incredible that a host can spend that much of his time to give you a good experience. He is available whenever you need to ask questions and his replies are relaxed and unhurried and he gives you as much time as you need.
I have been lucky to travel extensively in my life and stayed at many places. This place is awesome. Thanks Marco & I wish you much luck in your enterprise because I feel many people will benefit from your way of running a hostel.

Room Tip: Make sure you email Marco back with arrival times as he often pops out to do laundry/buy things and...

Hi Marco
I know you'll be reading, I just create an account for you: you'll be my first review ;)
I stayed 3 nights at Lima Backpackers Hostel and I will remember it for years because it is part of my trip to Peru as Arequipa and Machu Picchu are.
Staying at Marco's Hostel is like staying at a friend's place with friends, you feel welcomed and when it is time to leave you'll thinking about all the great moments you had ("pisco sour night" is definitely one of these moments).
Rooms and bathroom are clean, breakfasts are awesome, and Marco is always ready to help you: choose a restaurant, print a map and draw an itinerary for the day... We arrived late (midnight) but Marco was there, waiting for us.
I travelled with a friend, we stayed 3 nights in the twin bedroom (July 21-23).
We both enjoyed our stay.
Thank you Marco !

I have backpacked for many years amd this is simply the most cosy hostel i have ever stayed in.

It felt like a homestay almost. Impeccable place run by Marco. Beds are comfortable, place is clean, good wifi.

Objectively speaking, the only downside is the location which isnt near the touristy area compared to hostel options. But seriously this is a minor point.
