The Peru Star is a 3-star hotel at best. However, it is definitely excellent at being a 3-star hotel.

A few issues: room service takes forever, old amenities, static-y tv, a few accidental lobby calls to my room at all hours, a party going on in the house next door, and both days I went down to the restaurant at 11am, where I was told that the chef would not arrive until about 2pm -- that means no food. They offered me a piece of white bread and a piece of deli meat.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms with a large balcony.

The personnel at the hotel is incredibly friendly and nice. They are always willing to help and provided good and unbiased recommendations for taxi services, places to eat and visit. The room was clean, cozy and fairly sized. We got room 19, which involves going up three sets of stairs, which may not be agreeable for everyone. The hotel is midway between the city Center and Miraflores making the trip back from more touristic areas quick and cheap (under 10 soles each way). If the quality of the amenities would have matched all this, I would have given 5.
Unfortunately, after the second day of our stay the water pump stopped working. This translated into not having hot water in the shower, and then no water at all. Staff promptly started working on it, but when we came back at night there was only cold water and the next day the same. A friend was staying in another room and commented having the same problem. The problem got fixed until the following morning. That day the TV started having problems and the image was fuzzy and in some channels the image was completely distorted - when we asked the staff about this, they only replied that it was a problem from the operator, and nothing could be done about it. Finally, the last day we couldn't sleep because there was a party a few houses down the street, and with the windows being so thin it almost sounded like the room next to us was hosting it.
On average, the hotel is relatively inexpensive with respect to others in the area, but then you have to deal with issues that probably wouldn't be present elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the first flloor.

I stayed in room 10 with my husband, the unit was clean, had a small kitchen with a "breakfast area" I felt like I was at home. In front of my room there was a nice patio with furniture surrounded by plants and nice landscaping and a pool. The staff was very helpful they even opened the garage door for me at 3am so I can park my car inside. They have security cameras outside. I think the location is great and I would be happy to book it again if I go back to Lima.

Our family stayed with Peru Star Apartments twice during our trip to Peru. One time at the beginning for one night (Oct 6th), and once at the end of our trip for two nights (Oct 14-15th).

The first time we stayed at Peru Apartments we were given room number 2, an AMAZING room, lots of space, nicely furnished, two bedrooms and two baths. It was a pleasant stay considering we were just saying for one night. The hotel staff was friendly, they helped print out our boarding passes, and even gave us an exception for an early breakfast (we were leaving at 3AM in the morning to catch a 5AM flight). After that experience, we were really excited to come back to end our trip with them.

The 2nd time we came to stay and explore Lima, our experience wasn't as great. Firstly, the room we were given was '5A' which is on the 3rd floor, up a tricky staircase (after hiking to Machu Picchu we were tired of stairs). The room was definitely more dated, and only had one bath for 4 people. They didn't have any other rooms available, so we figured no big deal. But our first night of sleep was somewhat ridiculous... there was a car alarm in the neighborhood that kept going off in the morning (every 20mins), and kept waking us up...I spoke to other guests, and they informed me it was even worse the day before. When I brought it up to the front desk, they didn't seem to want to do much about it, other then say it wasn't their car... we then asked for the hotel to call a cab for us to go to a nearby museum, we were unaware that calling a cab would cost over double what it would cost if we just flagged one down (16Soles vs. 6 Soles). I don't think this is entirely the hotel's fault, but it would be nice if they told the guests that calling cabs cost more then just flagging one down yourself, just out of common courtesy.

The location of the hotel is in a safe neighborhood (San Isidro), but it is a bit far from any major sights, you need to take cabs (they're cheap if you flag one down yourself anyways so it's not a big deal). The airport pick up from the hotel is also quite expensive, especially if it's during odd hours. They charge over $40US, when you can just call a Taxi Green Cab for 40Soles (~2.5x cheaper!). We used their service once, then realized we were better off calling our own cab...

So overall, I have mixed feelings about recommending this establishment, it's a good deal for the price, but bring ear plugs, ask for room #2, and get your own rides to the airport and to see the sights :)...

Room Tip: If you're getting a family apartment request for Room #2!

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Trip Advisor and for choosing us as your lodging option in Lima. It was a pleasure to serve and help you with special requests like early breakfast, our goal is always to make our guests feel like they are at home with their peruvian family.

I would like to take this opportunity to clarify some misconceptions for future travelers. This guest was offered a free upgrade to a Deluxe Apartment - our flagship unit in the hotel as described on our website-- but they had originally chosen one of our units called the Family Standard which very comfortably suits families and group travelers on a budget. Upon the return of the guest, we were fully booked and couldn't offer an upgrade. All of our units have a very extensive description on our website and pictures accompanying it so guests can choose the unit and apartment that best suits their needs and budget. One of our main goals has always been to be an affordable, great value, and excellent service accommodation option for our guests visiting Lima.

The situation of the car alarm, was very unfortunate and out of the ordinary. Sadly, there was legitimally nothing that our staff could do because the car did not belong to any of our guests so it was impossible to locate an owner to tell him/her to turn off the car alarm. Fortunately, the hotel - as many guests have described in many many reviews - is located in a very safe and quiet area of Lima, so our guests can enjoy a relaxing and pleasant time.

Calling a secure cab always costs more than hailing a cab from the street (this is true in any small or big city and in any country) because myriad reasons: insurance, safety, regulation, car age, etc. All of our guests have the prerogative to choose between a street cab and a secure cab, and we help them with either decision. It has been our experience that the vast majority of guests ask us to call them a safe cab and we do so. However, we have helped many guests - and even walked with them down to the main avenue (as detailed by previous reviewers) - to hail a cab and help them get a better cab fare, because when street cabs see foreigners they tend to charge more, and it can be dangerous. Again as always, our goal is and always will be suiting our guests' needs to the best of our capacity. We are a hard working family and we love nothing more than seeing our guests completely satisfied and happy during and after their stay.

All the best,
Marcos Lostaunau

We were greeted/dropped off at the airport promptly by Jose and John often...(not being on time can ruin your plans)...our greeting by Milko was sincere and energetic -even though very late at night, and our bags carried to our room. Our room was clean, well appointed and the gardens/views and morning birds are lovely. Breakfast/Dinners...exceptionally attentive and friendly staff: Linder, Roxana, Freddy, and Susana...they worked around our busy travel schedules and kept us fed also offered wonderful additional site seeing suggestions for the city of Lima. After hiking the Inka trail, we returned to stay at this same hotel because it felt like family...and we were greeted with hugs and smiles. When you arrive, tell them...Terri and Dan say hello! (Leslie, Erika and Larissa...great job with booking at reception!)

Room Tip: Count on reception to give you the best room they have...higher are nicer, but you have steps to get...

This hotel is in San Isidro which may be a bit quite for some, but is safe to walk around in and suited us just fine. Our apartment was enormous and well equipped, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the facilities on site good.

If I was being very critical our ground floor room smelt and felt a little damp (but we stayed at the tail end of winter when the city is shrouded in fog all day) but we did have a dehumidifier provided. I am sure in summer this won't be an issue.

Room Tip: Some rooms have terraces, or direct garden access, its worth asking!

Travelled here with my husband and was expecting something quite basic for the price. What we found was excellent (English-speaking) service, small but comfortable rooms and a great, quiet location. Their upfront service was very good - they arranged an airport transfer and recommended and arranged a day tour of Lima for us via email. The room was small but comfortably appointed, with TV and small kitchenette. The little restaurant only offers a small breakfast (perfectly sufficient), but go for a dinner while you're there for a great introduction to Peruvian cuisine. It is slightly off the main tourist area of Miraflores, but managed to walk to LarcoMar (the touristy shopping centre) for lunch, so definitely not "off the beaten track" at all! Lovely hotel.

Thank you for sharing your experience about our restaurant, we are happy that you enjoyed it as well! We started the restaurant exactly for the reason you mention: to offer home made meals, prepared fresh to order, for tourists who want an introduction to our delicious peruvian cuisine. Thank you again for choosing us, we know you have many lodging options when you travel to Lima, and we are truly honored that you chose our small family-run hotel.
