I stayed here mainly because their location (close to the airport and my transit was very short.) I paid $40 for a private room that had kinda nasty looking bed/pillow and a bathroom. No a/c, of course. The room didn't have even a nail on the wall and I had no place to hang any clothes. None of those things would have mattered, as I appreciated very friendly staff.
But, I am still outraged that they had nerves to rip me off so much with taxi ride. They charged me about $20 for the ride to/from airport (RT.) The taxi that they used was the cheaper one that stays outside the airport, and distance was literally 5 minute away. Found out that actual cost (to hostel) was about $4. I can accept being charged double or even triple as a dumb tourist that doesn't speak Spanish. Twenty dollars is not a large amount, by all means. But, five times the actual cost? It's unconscionable behavior.
I am not a novice traveler, and have been to many countries that I didn't speak their languages. But, I've never experienced so much "tourist rip offs" as in Peru; from lodging to tours to....More
