La Casa Fitzcarraldo
Ranked #19 of 29 Hotels in Iquitos
Reviewed October 31, 2009

La Casa Fitzcarraldo is a comfortable, relaxing oasis located just outside of downtown Iquitos. The rooms are clean and simple. The proprietor, Walter, could not have been a more gracious host. We enjoyed a delicious dinner of local fish and the best ceviche in Peru. The pool is beautiful and such a relaxing spot to spend a day prior to a trip on the Amazon.

This hotel is situated near the center of hectic Iquitos however it feels as though you are in a peaceful jungle once you enter its thick perimeter wall. My wife and I stayed here for one night. Upon arriving, the owner offered my sick wife tea and me a local beer. He also explained the intricacies of our room and told me about the hotel and its history. He was very hospitable. The grounds are incredible: nice pool, three-story tree house, various patios and dense vegetation. The room we stayed in (the Green Room) was also very nice with local decor and cable TV. The only downside was a cold shower. I would definitely stay here again.

Excellent garden and swimming pool.

We stayed in the small room. Rooms were clean. 2 out 3 nights it was for me not possible to sleep (with earplugs) because the all night ongoing work opposite the hotel.

Don't stay here when you have to stay in the small room.

The bungalow must be good.

We stayed two nights, 1 night before and after a jungle trip to the Tahuayo lodge. Iquitos was really like no other place I have ever been to before. The motor cars are incessant, another traveller at the tahuayo lodge suggested it was similar to Vietnam. The markets are something to be seen and the city always seems to be teeming with people and noise.

The first night we arrived late and we were picked up early for trip to the amazon, so more of the experience was on the last night when there was time to admire the grounds, swim and have a leisurely dinner. Also the first night the power went out in the city, including the B&B, so there wasn't a lot to see!! They had a backup generator that made eating possible. Walter was our host for both nights and he did a wonderful job. We ate dinner twice and the food was excellent. He was very accomodating with keeping our luggage and his staff were friendly, especially considering our Spanish was not the greatest!!!

The grounds are breathtaking, and it is obvious a lot of time is spent making them look beautiful. We stayed in the blue room which was nice, especially great was having access to cold beer and pop. The breakfast was also very good with fresh fruit, bread and eggs available. The location was not that far from downtown Iquitos, and for us it worked perfectly and although we are not likely to return to that area of the world, we would definitely recommend it to others.

Just finished a week-plus Amazon river trip that ended in Iquitos, Peru. Concluding my camping/river ordeal at La Casa Fitzcarraldo could not have been a better choice. The lovely house and grounds, steeped in film history of Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, The Wrath of God, is an amazing jungle paradise amid Iquitos's loud hustle and bustle. The food is terrific, the rooms cozy and comfortable, and the owners/proprietors are convivial, multi-lingual, and knowledgeable about the area--they can help you with anything from dinner recommendations, nightlife, and jungle tours.

I was really impressed with the comfort, the friendliness, and the overall hospitality of La Casa Fitzcarraldo. The place is really unique, including a gorgeous pool and a five-storey treehouse that offers hammocks and chairs on different levels and a spectacular panoramic view of the city. Very reasonable rates, too, whether needing a single room or a bungalow.

Highly recommended!
