Owner description: Please visit us in Padre Cocha! See our website for more info. Please know that a previous employee of the refuge has also set up a butterfly house and is offering boat-drivers commission to take visitors to this alternative centre rather than the original Pilpintuwasi. The true centre offers homes to a number of rescued animals in addition to the butterfly house. Please ensure you follow our visiting directions as we would love to welcome you all to our centre during your visit to Iquitos. About us: Pilpintuwasi is a wildlife rescue and temporary custody centre located on 20 hectares of land in the village of Padre Cocha, 20 minutes outside of Iquitos, the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon. We are a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting animals affected by the poaching and trafficking industry which thrives in Iquitos. We work with the ecological police to take in animals confiscated from markets, airports and homes, which often arrive with injuries and malnourishment.

This was one of the best things we stumbled upon in Iquitos. It was not originally a part of our trip itinerary, but we wanted to stop here after seeing the great reviews - we were thoroughly impressed! Pilpintuwasi is way more than just a butterfly farm, there are tons of rescued animals here being brought back to health. Unlike other sites visited, you could tell that the animals were being cared for and treated with love. This place isn't an exibit, it's a sanctuary and place of learning. Highly recommended!!

One of our favorite visits on this trip, we were completely engaged by the excellent guides on staff who explained all the work they were doing in detail. It's a small site and doesn't take long to wander through it all, though we could have easily spent more time and been happy.

Coming from a person who only planned the visit the place and then became a volunteer shows how incredible this place truly is! This animal rescue center has really opened my mind and taught me a lot about animals and the cruel people that have damaged there lives. This place teaches us about different animals and ways to stop illegal and black marketing animals. The place is run by an incredible owner named Gudrun who has a massive heart for animals and wont let anything get in her way to stop protecting them. She also has a wonderful team of volunteer and workers who are Very friendly and love sharing what they do with the people who come to visit!
dont give this place a pass as you will definetly be missing out

I would highly recommend people visiting Pilpintuwasi Butterfly farm and animal orphanage since you learn so much about Butterflies and about the other animals they keep. We were able to get up very close to the animals and were able to take pictures of all, which include the Jaguar, various Monkeys, Parrots, Giant anteater, Sloth, Ocelot (big cat), RIng tailed Coati, Anaconda snake and more. The main highlight for me was seeing the Jaguar, since I was unable to see one when I stayed in the jungle. It was so great seeing these animals being kept in fantastic conditions unlike other places I have visited. It is clear that all of the people working/volunterring there are passionate and committed to protecting endangered species. Visiting here is great value for money 20 Sol / 5 pound per adult. If you are a student you get in half price.

It is an interesting place, but definitely not worth its price! We went on the guided tour and it was interesting; the volunteer, who shown us around knew a lot about the butterflies and had a neat story about each animal they keep there, but it was all done in too much rush; we wanted to take some pictures of the animals, look at them for a while, but we were always rushed to keep going. And later when we wanted to wander around to see the animals again we were told it is not possible, because we can put our fingers inside of the cages!!! (we are adults!) and if we get hurt they don't take responsibility (so however, it is not mentioned in their leaflet, you have to attend the guided tour, because otherwise you cannot see anything!). If they don't trust people's common sense, they should organize it so that it is safe for everybody. When you go to the ZOO, you are not followed by a personal guard, so that you won't jump to lions cage; warnings are enough. And unfortunately this place feels like ZOO a little bit; they advertise themselves as keeping the animals in semi-captivity, but vast majority of them is kept in cages. They always have very convincing story why is that and I'd like to believe them, but anyway the cages are far too small! Don't expect to see too many butterflies as well; it is either too cold, too hot or to wet for them to fly and besides some of them might be in the shape of caterpillar during your visit, but that's nature...
If it costed half the price I'd give it four dots, but for a place this size it is far too expensive.
