The Taypikala Hotel is a rambling three story, three star hotel within walking distance of the Cathedral and main Plaza of Cusco. It is part of a group which has hotels elsewhere in Peru.
On entering the hotel for the first time there was a musky odour in the foyer but it was not present in the rooms. Although there were two tour groups in the foyer attempting to leave or register for the hotel the sole receptionist did a magnificent job and checked us in quickly without any fuss.
The room was clean, quaintly furnished and had plenty of cupboard space. There were two double beds in the room and unusually, a curtained off spa bath with shower over in a corner of the bedroom from which you could watch the TV. There was an in room safe, a portable electric heater and a telephone. The only windows in the room were over the spa bath and in the bathroom. They were of frosted glass and if you needed to see out you had to open them.
A laundry service was offered with the following examples of prices: T shirt US$1, jeans US$3, shorts US$1 and a blouse US$2. Next to the hotel was a laundry that charged by the kilo and offered a very quick turnaround.
The bathroom was clean with a toilet and basin. Amenities provided included 2 sachets of shampoo, 2 sachets of conditioners and two cakes of soap. The water was pleasantly hot.
In the foyer of the hotel was free Coca tea on a help yourself basis, fresh Coca leaves and for those in need 3 oxygen bottles and masks. The hotel also has a secure facility to permit guests to leave their bags overnight while visiting nearby tourist sites such Machupicchu.
Breakfast was served from 5.00am. Perfect for travellers in this part of the world. Breakfast was served on a buffet basis and consisted of the normal continental breakfast provisions with the added benefit of boiled or scrambled eggs and pieces of fish. There was an impressive range of fresh fruit to select from such as watermelon, other melons, pineapple, persimmons, kiwi fruit and bananas. An ample supply of cheese, ham and bakery items was available.
The hotel is within walking distance of several restaurants and bars and the busy night life of the Plaza.
Staff at the hotel was attentive to the needs of the guests and their friendliness made our stay at the hotel a pleasant one. It is deserving of more than three stars.
I would have no hesitation in staying at this hotel again should I visit Cusco.
