“Trip of a lifetime!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014 via mobile

If you are deciding to take the Hiram Bingham or some other type of transportation to the famed Manchu Picchu let me decide for you. This by far exceeded my expectations by ten fold! The staff, food, execution and scenery equal that of 5 star hotel in any country!!! I own two restaurants so I am very critical on the components of a well run restaurant and to do that while on wheels...get my two thumbs up. Albeit a bit pricy the experience is priceless. Without any hesitation book a trip on the Hiram Bingham for a trip of a life time!!!

“Some Big Misses in a Highly Anticipated Experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2014

Traveling to Machu Picchu on the Orient Express has been on my bucket list for years so I was very excited to take this train ride with my husband and 6 year old son. Sadly, our trip fell in the wet season so we had to take the bi-modal trip (bus and train). While the staff tried to offer great service, the bus was very small and cramped, with no facilities. After approximately 90 minutes, we settled into our dining car on the train and were ready to experience the luxury of the Hiram Bingham.

I'm not sure what the situation was with our table but it seemed to be in the invisible zone. Every other passenger was greeted with mimosas except for us. We had to hail down the wait staff to get our drinks while other tables seemed to have constant attention. During dinner, we noticed the other tables had their second courses cleared before we received our first. When we inquired about our dinner, we received a simple salad with avocado, not the traditional Peruvian pickled vegetables promised by the menu. We refused the basic salad and, eventually, we were brought the dinner we were supposed to receive. Given that we purchased an upcharge wine instead of the house wine given with dinner, I would have expected at least the same level of service as the rest of the diners.

The staff was accommodating to our 6 year old by offering pasta for lunch and a plain steak with rice for dinner instead of the set menu but the misses in the dining room really left me disappointed with the experience.

“The only way to travel”

Hiram Bingham Train

The first thing to say is that the train journey was excellent. The whole experience, the food, wine, Pisco Sours was absolutely great. The service from the train attendance as well as the station staff was as you would expect from Orient Express.

The second thing to note is that this was part of an overall journey we took in Peru booked and arranged through Orient Express in Charleston USA. It should be noted that the train does not operate every day so itineraries may need to be planned around the trains schedule. We chose to depart from Cusco, although the station is now in the outskirts of the city as the line into the city itself had become too dangerous due to increased road traffic. We then travelled on the train all the way to the end point having lunch on board as we went. The train is mostly made up of dining cars and at the rear of the train is a bar and observation car. There is a band that plays in the bar and this may be too noisy for some.

When we travelled the train was not particularly full and there was plenty of room to move around and to take one’s turn at the back of the train looking out on the scenery. The train does not run particularly quickly or smoothly but the relatively slow journey along the single track is accomplished at an appropriately leisurely pace.

On arrival at the destination station travellers are then taken the last few miles up to the gates of the Machu Pichu site. Some travellers were just taking a daytrip and this seems to be entirely possible allowing for a few hours at the magnificent site before returning back to Cusco on the train.

However we decided to spend a night at the Sanctury Lodge Hotel (see our trip advisor report) so were deposited at the hotel entrance and checked into the hotel. The next day in the afternoon we were collected and taken back to the train for the evening journey but as we had opted to stay in Sacred Valley at the hotel Rio Sagrado (see our trip advisor report) we departed the train at Ollie Tampa Bay Station. Again we were looked after well on this journey and as they knew we were departing the train before Cusco, the staff ensured that we were served first so that dinner was complete before our stop.

It’s also worth noting that the Sanctuary Lodge Hotel is right outside the gates of the Machu Picchu Park and has a separate dining room for hotel guests and those using the Hirham Bingham train service. Even though the coach system limits to some extent visitors to the site, there are still considerable numbers waiting to get into the park and waiting for their return buses to the station – most people of course will be travelling on regular trains and other tourist trains. The use of the separate dining room does allow some comfort at the site if you are not staying in the hotel. The other restaurant is really a canteen and seems to be very very crowded.

Please read my other trip advisor reviews of this trip: Hotel B Arts in Lima, The Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the Palacio Nazarenas and the Hotel Rio Sagrado.

“Delightful ride”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2014

The train ride added to the experience of going to Machu PIcchu. The food was nice, not too filling. We experienced a costumed dancer and a fashion show on the 1-1/2 hour ride. The views through the Sacred Valley were amazing.

“Pampered experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2014

Overall we were pampered on this trip! The experience was absolutely amazing. The staff, Javier, Erasmo and Carlos could not have been nicer or more accommodating. If you want a 1st class way to see Machupicchu this is it!
