This is the type of hotel you dream about when on vacation. The building is done in the colonial style with a series of charming courtyards around which are the rooms. The building dates back to 1599 and you feel you are staying in a Spanish colonial art museum with large religious canvases throughout, but with modernized rooms and plumbing. It is centrally located with a nice restaurant and bar on premises. Service is great, staff is courteous, and the hotel is within easy walking distance to the central city square and cathedral. First time we were given a nice room on second floor facing a courtyard, returned from Machu Picchu three nights later and was given a two room suite that was so charming and seemingly historic, that we took pictures of all the paintings and furnishings in the room. This was an experience we will always remember.

We stayed in this hotel twice during our recent trip to Peru, one night before we visited Macchu Pichu and two nights afterwards. The first night we stayed we were allocated a first floor room with no external windows, the only window being a small window overlooking the internal courtyard, The room was situated just at the top of stone steps leading to the ground floor. The altitude in Cusco is a lot higher than most people are used to therefore a good flow of air is necessary, consequently we had to keep the internal window open. Bad mistake ! Other reviews have mentioned the noise factor, the first night we were there it was so bad it was impossible to sleep and we were tired after travelling a long way. Guests are coming and going all night consequently they are pulling their suitcases on the stone floors relentlessly. There were other problems with this room so we requested on our return could we be allocated a better quieter room. They said we would be given a suite on our return, unfortunately on our return they had lost our booking and hadn't allocated us any room. This was 10 p.m. and once again we were tired after travelling from Macchu Pichu, they finally found us a room, not the promised suite at 10.45 p.m. This again was a small noisy room with no external window ! They again promised a suite for our final night, this we eventually got and it was fine, quiet and no problems.
The problem is that most of the rooms only have internal windows, there are very few rooms with external windows. There were numerous complaints from guests with exactly the same problem whilst we were there unfortunately the majority were not given a change of room because simply there are not enough ! We did not find the staff particularly efficient, they panicked when they realised they hadn't a room for us so late at night, at one stage they said they had a wonderful suite for us when were shown to the room we unlocked the door to find two men in bed ! The hotel may be quaint and handy for the main square and restaurants but the overriding factor is that the majority of the rooms are very small and extremely noisy. Don't take the risk, find another hotel.

Room Tip: A suite with an external window

Why this beautiful hotel isn't in the top three is beyond me. The service, location, and setting were wonderful. The historic center do town is only a 5 minute walk. The hotel it's self is comprised of 4 historic villas, connected by a maze of walkways, past gorgeous patios with fountains, art, large wooden tables and chairs. Yes, you will walk through the maze to get to your room. Yes you will climb a few stairways. But this is authentic, beautiful and part of the wonder that is Cusco. Bedrooms are very large, great beds, large bathrooms, delicious breakfasts and a hot coco tea at all times. Very helpful front desk and concierge. I would highly recommend this beautiful hotel, and hope to return to cusco soon.

Lobby and restaurant area were beautiful. THe room was tiny and the bathtub was disgusting - a film of shampoo and conditioner! It had not been cleaned in a long time. Cusco is an old city and the major hotels in older buildings. There is no excuse for not having a clean restroom. ALso, don't expect any ventilation system. Would have opened the window, but there was no screen. Not very safe and no way to keep out bugs. This was part of a tour group and I will contact them to tell them to tell Private Collection to clean up their act.

Great family hotel a short walk from the centre of Cusco. We used the hotel as our base for five days and loved it. Rooms were very quiet, clean and tidy.
Breakfast was reasonable. We had dinner there twice for convenience, and both times thoroughly enjoyed. The trouble is there are plenty of other great food destinations in Cusco.
The walk to the Plaza is about five minutes and very safe.
Great family hotel, would stay there again.

We stayed here for 4 nights in 2 different rooms in April/May of 2013. We were in 2 different rooms because we went up to Machu Picchu and came back. Both our rooms were really nice, very comfortable beds, nice showers, etc. My biggest complaint is that the rooms are loud and not well soundproofed. You can hear the people in the room next to you and you can really hear everything from the corridors. It would wake us up in the night and in the morning.

The breakfast at this hotel was great, a nice omelette station, good french toast, fruit, cheese, etc.

Location was within walking distance (5 minutes uphill) of the main square in Cusco.

They also had coca tea available for the guests which was nice to adjust to the altitude.

I would recommend and would stay here again!

Room Tip: I would request a quiet room at the end of a corridor.

My husband and I stayed a total of 3 nights on our way to and from Machu Picchu.

The staff are wonderful and they recognize you each time they see you!! The beds are comfortable; the rooms are clean. A buffet breakfast was included in the cost of our room. This opens at 5 in the morning for those of us up for an early departure.

The location of the hotel is very good. Just a few blocks off the Plaza de Armes. We walked all over the place and didn't have any problems.

I'd recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

And don't forget to drink the coca tea!! The altitude is an issue.
