“Amazing Hotel Staff Makes this Hotel a Gem”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

We recently stayed at Casa San Blas, as part of a 9 day trip to Peru. Our itinerary had us using Cusco as our home base and traveling to Puerto Maldanado, Machu Picchu and finally back to Lima. Because of this itinerary, we stayed at Casa San Blas a total of 4 nights, but only two of them consecutive. We arrived early on a morning flight from Lima, were picked up at the airport and quickly checked into our room. The hotel staff gave us tons of recommendations for restaurants and were more than happy to make reservations for us. They were also willing to keep our luggage free of charge while we were traveling to other locations.

The thing that really sets this hotel apart is their front desk staff, we mentioned we were interested in touring the Sacred Valley so they set up a private driver and tour for a full day. Nothing is too big or too little a request. We were also upgraded on our last night at the hotel to an amazing apartment room with two floors and a kitchen. The service at this hotel is at the level of any four or five star hotel.

The only reason I've knocked the score a little is because some of the rooms are very noisy in the morning because of announcements form a nearby school. That said, most of the time we stayed we were up before the noise started, just don't expect to sleep in late on school days.

My partner and I stayed for 3 nights in June, 2012. It is much better than the other 3-star hotels we stayed in in Cusco (or in Peru, for that matter). When we arrived, my partner was out of breath and dizzy. Immediately, the staff sat him down and offered him coca tea to drink. They were very friendly and helpful.

The hotel itself is beautiful and cozy. It is made of stone and wood and had character. The walls are decorated with tapestries famous in the area. There's a nice waiting area with books and tea. The view of the city is also stunning.

June is winter season and the rooms are well-equipped with a heater. In addition, the staff come in after dinner (while we were out), turned down the covers, and inserted hot water bottles into our beds.

Breakfast was included for us and includes both hot and cold items, like eggs, meat, cereal, and fruit. There was always something local that we could try. The place for breakfast is in the small restaurant (seats about 10-15) adjacent to the hotel and it also serves excellent dinner.

All in all, a fantastic stay! Here's a summary:

Pro's:
+ Good location. San Blas itself is a beautiful part of town. Plus the hotel is about a 10 min walk to central square and near all sorts of shops. The Inca stone with 12 angles is on the way to the central square.
+ Clean and cozy rooms. Heating and warm water bottles included. Tastefully decorated.
+ Friendly and helpful staff. Spoke very good English. Gave us suggestions about where to go and see. Was prompt with our laundry.
+ Excellent food. Lots of choices (warm, hot, meats, veggies, cereal, fruits)

Con's:
- Laundry was a tad expensive, but everything came back clean and neatly folded

I'd stay here again without a second thought!

We stayed in a room that had great views of the city. Had just left the jungle, and it was wonderfully refreshing to have a clean and comfortable room. Location was very convenient to Plaza des Armes and in the quaint San Blas area. Breakfast was good. Only complaint was that one night there was extremely loud music until late in the night, did not happen the next night so seemed to be a one off. Was great place, definitely boutique high quality, but probably cheaper places to stay in Cuzco that are also of good quality.

We really enjoyed our time in this little hotel. Encouraged by the prior reviews and our booking agent (and a discount he dangled in front of us) we booked a junior suite, which opens to the outside/balcony, instead of inside to the lobby. Lovely views from our well-appointed room. Everything in San Blas is up flights of stairs, as was our room, but we were very happy with it. It was quiet, dark and comfortable. (Hot water bottles in the bed at night!) The little restaurant downstairs serves a plentiful and early breakfast, and we were well-placed to enjoy the Plaza de Armas and the San Blas neighborhood. The desk staff was kind and helpful, remembering our earlier questions and arranging help with cabs, etc. Definitely recommended.

Room Tip: We were glad to have a suite opening to the outdoors; the views were delicious!

The location is good. Have no complaints about the room, but the staff was not very friendly. nobody smiles at this hotel very much. For the amount of money we paid to stay here, we were expecting a higher standard.

I discovered Casa San Blas in 2011 when I was walking around Cusco and noticed this small, intimate hotel on a cul-de-sac & asked to see a room. I stayed there with my partner in August 2012. The suites are amazing. King size beds, seating area, lovely bathrooms and SPECTACULAR views of the city. A balcony outside the front door is the perfect place to sip coffee and look out over the red tile roofs. The staff was super helpful. We got back late from our Inca Trail hike and they arranged for a pizza delivery to our room. They were also terrific making reservations at the more popular restaurants. The breakfasts are excellent and early enough (5:00am to 10:00am) that you can grab a bite before heading out for a tour or trek at 5:30am. San Blas is probably the nicest area to stay in Cusco and an easy walk to the main plaza.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money for a suite. It's worth it.
