What a pleasant surprise - incredibly detailed tapestries by a true textile master, right around the corner from my hotel. It's a complimentary visit to see Maximo Laura's masterpieces. Highly recommended.

I was in Cusco at the opening of the Laura museum-store in October 2013 and agree with other reviewers here about the fine use of space and the impressive art of the tapestry rugs/wall hangings to be found there. Laura is so highly regarded that there are now "knock offs" of his work - I saw a couple in Cusco and Arequipa, for example. So if you fall in love with a gorgeously colored tapestry you see elsewhere and feel the urge to buy it, it'd be worthwhile first to compare it with those actually from Maximo Laura's studio. His color blending (of finely spun alpaca yarn, no less) is hard to match. His images are quite often complex enough and/or so nicely integrated that they repay extended examination.
I got a greater sense of the range of possibilities in Laura's work (and a hint of the differences between his work and the imitators') within the museum itself. I wound up preferring several of the pieces in the "museum" section - which of course are not for sale - to those you can buy in the first room. I understand, though, that he can do special orders, if one wants.
It's mostly personal taste that makes me rate the Laura museum as just "very good." I find his palette very bright and am more appreciative of the muted yet rich colors of older or more traditional work - for example, in the extraordinary modern versions of traditional ceramics at the Arte Olave gallery or a tiny shop with vintage and older textiles, both up the street from the Laura museum toward the plaza, then just up the first left before the church. Despite such matters of taste, I was moved by a small plaque near the door of Laura's museum, Laura's homage to his father, from whom he learned the work and long "discipline" of tapestry, which itself is an homage to the heritage and fine crafts of Peru.

I visited Museo Maximo Laura on a recent trip, my first, to Cusco and to Peru. This museum gleams with the beautiful, dreamlike imagery of Mr. Laura's original and very beautiful tapestries.
He has taken his own weavings, and I would presume Peruvian weavings into another dimension--they are exquisite, contemporary masterpieces of color, design and execution. I am not a weaver myself, but I found myself inspired by many of the woven works of art.

Beautiful museum! A hidden gem right outside my hotel door in San Blas. And it's free! Maximo Laura's work is absolutely unbelievable in complexity, texture and color. Staff is very friendly and knowledgable! So glad I stopped in, don't miss it!

Cusco is a haven for textile lovers, but this gallery would satisfy all art lovers. It is a museum of the private collection of Maximo Laura, his tapestries are works of art with extraordinary beauty, the colours, the textures, the imagination; contemporary art rich with symbolism of the culture of his country. The gallery/museum is located in the lovely San Blas neighbourhood where one can find many shops and restaurants. There is no entrance fee to this museum, and some of the works are for sale.
