“Got salt? Yes it does!”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

This is just the most fun place to drive up to and peek over the side hill down to the ponds. Great pictures! But then drive on in and walk around. No guides and no rules, you can explore the entire area. The water running into the ponds from the hillside is intensely salty and the sources for the mineral. Workers were out in the pond area following the process of collecting this precious Peruvian salt. Apparently anyone willing to follow the rules and can identify an open pond can work it. There are multiple shops selling all forms of the salt and other typical crafts. My thought was to buy the packaged salt that has not set in the sun and caused condensation on the package. The salt is heavy, make sure you have the weight allowance in your baggage for the trip home.

“Something completely different”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

These salt pools are so intruiging. Wander (carefully) along the edges of these incredible pools, formed by the local community from the hot salt water spring that comes out of the hillside. The pools are staggered down a fairly steep hill, and are all owned by individual families who used to be able to make a living out of gathering the salt. The site does still sell salt but is not a viable operation, except for the money the tourists bring. It is not overcrowded so a pleasureable sight to visit.

“Photographers heaven”

Took a taxi, with Moray and Chincheros this was a super day out. An extraordinary site, like nothing else on earth. We didn't walk around because it was raining, but really it's the overall impression that is so weird.

“Fantastic-Not to be missed”

An amazing site. Glad we added an extra day to our trip to see this and Moray. Unbelievable to think the salt mines have been worked for 800 years.
