“Highly Rewarding Adventure”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

Pachamama Explorers was able to provide my wife and I with a top-notch adventure experience; one that was physically challenging, awe-inspiring and spiritually uplifting. We opted for the 4-day Inca Trail Trek and, from day one of booking, the organization by Hernan was flawless. With very limited knowledge of Peru and amateur hiking experience, we felt very prepared for our journey.

The beginning of the trip began very well with punctual, safe and clean transportation, Our guide, Gerson, was an absolute professional. Gerson took his job very seriously, yet had a great sense of humor. Gerson exhibited a strong sense for the Inca culture and educated us on the significance of the Inca Trail, the spiritual beliefs of the Inca and how such beliefs have translated into modern day Andean culture.

The porters were all hard-working, friendly and helpful. In particular, the cook, Carlos, was highly skilled - the food was far better than anything I have experience on a backpacking trip. From fresh trout and vegetables to apple cake to quinoa soups, we were very well fed.

Considering all that is included within the trek experience, Pachamama's rate is very reasonable. If you are searching for a highly rewarding adventure with a company that respects you as a customer, as well as the nature and history involved in the experience, look no further than Pachamama.

“Inca trail 4 day trek”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

Last week our family used Pachamama as guides on our inca trail trek. They were absolutely marvelous. The food was good and the kind porters had everything set up as we arrived as each stop. The guides, Jason and William, were very knowledgable about the Incan history and culture and spent a lot of time talking about them at the various ruins. Along the way, William pointed out many plants and what they were used for by the incans. We had a group of 11 persons that moved at different paces, yet they managed to let everyone go at their own pace, encouraging us along the way. That was the toughest hike we ever did but it was such an accomplishment with a dramatic reward at the end. The communication prior to the hike and online was excellent and I highly recommend using Pachamama as your tour guide.

“Stop researching right now. This is the company you want to use. Trust me.”

5-day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

After debating between the traditional Inca trail and the relatively new Salkantay trek, I went with the Salkantay trek, because it offered more challenging hikes, more variety and smaller crowds. After researching several companies that offered this hike, I settled on Pachamama Explorers, because it appeared to be the most informative and trustworthy of the websites I visited.

I was not disappointed in any way.

They emailed back within a day and answered every question I asked in preparation for the trip.

The staff was extremely helpful once in country.

Once the trip began, the guide, Frank, was amazing, a perfect blend of professionalism and personality; the food was excellent, and all our needs were met without question; and the trail itself was worth all the work.

And most importantly, Frank made sure that we were the first ones at Machu Picchu to get that all-important photo overlooking the whole site.

The whole experience was one I will not soon forget.

PS - if they ask you if you want to do Wayna Picchu, SAY YES. It's tough, but it offers an amazing view below.

“Lares Valley Trek (4 day / 3 nights)”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

This trip took us to another world and illustrated how much we take for granted. The landscape was beautiful, the food was amazing, and the staff was clearly doing the best that they knew how, but we were not prepared for this poorly organized adventure.

1- Right at the start of our trip, we went out of our way to get to the hot springs. While this might have been nice after some trekking, it made little sense this so early in the trip. Also, the towel that facility rented to me was damp as if it had just been used.

2- The 'horses' that we rented (due to overdoing it on the previous trek), did not seem strong enough to carry us. The horsemen seemed nervous about this as well. Fortunately our legs recovered by day 2.

3- We rented sleeping bags from the company, incorrectly assuming that they would be appropriate for the trek. When new, these sleeping bags were rated to +8 degrees. The temperature went to -12, and the bags were far from new! They also did not zip together. At this point we told the guide that we wanted to turn around. Fortunately they were able to give us horse blankets for additional warmth.

4- Sanitation was a problem. While it might not be reasonable to expect the local people to put in something to accommodate us, it would have been nice if we had been given some advanced warning so that we could prepare, and some additional tips on how to deal with the situation.

5- Once we got wet there was no real way to get dry.
...

100- Our tour of Machu Picchu ended by 10 AM but the return train ticket that they booked for us was for the evening. Fortunately we were able to exchange our ticket and hire our own transportation back to Cusco.

In contrast with our tour of Colca Canyon where the team prepared us well and appeared to have thought of every detail along the way and made intelligent decisions to make things go smoothly, this tour (with the exception of the food) illustrated what life can be like if you don't plan ahead or learn from your experiences.

Take-home message: a worthwhile trip, but make your own preparations!!!

“Peru”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

We wanted to do the 4 day Inca trail and spend some time in Peru. Debbie gave us suggestions and figured out the logistics. We saw Lima, Arequipa, the Colca Canyon (with condors) then settled in Cusco to further acclimate for the hike. Our guides were all great. For the Inca Trail our guidesa were Herbert and Wilian. Herbert took his job seriously and explained as much as we had energy to listen to. He also guided us on a tour of Cusco and The Sacred Valley prior to the trail. he whole experience was AWESOME and I recommend using Pachamama for your adventure in Peru
