My husband and I stayed at Royal Frankenstein in October 2011 on two separate occasions whilst in Peru. Both times we had the same room, which was on the top floor; it was always clean and tidy with hot water. The owner Ludwig was always helpful and was a source of knowledge, especially if you were on a tight budget.

We also stored our luggage here - including some fragile pottery - without any difficulties or breakages :-)

A extremely friendly hostel owner greats you with all the info you need. The doubles above Cucos rooftops felt like a home away from home. We couldn't have asked for more.

The Royal Frankenstein was fantastic for the price. We stayed for 5 nights while touring Cuzco. We walked to the nearby market and made our own meals almost every day. There were 3 amazing bakeries within 2 blocks. Ludwig gave us a list of restaurants/eateries around town that he would recommended, categorized by quality for low cost, types of cuisine, etc.

The place was a bit dark, but it was full of lush plants and animals. There is even an iguana! We stayed in one room on the second floor and moved to a room on the roof. The room on the roof was very open, bright and clean. Also, I always felt safe completely safe here!

Room Tip: The rooms on the roof offer more natural light and have a view of the city.

First we must say that the hostel owner is really a nice guy. He has all the information a low-budget backpacker needs to experience the Andes and Maccu Piccu.

However, the room we got (first floor in the back, Mary Shelley) - even though charming, the room smells of moist. The wool blankets for the beds felt as if they had not been cleaned for a very long time, as they felt very heavy and as if the moisture would not go entirely out of them. The floor in the bathroom was very dirty - so not a place to stay if you are particular about cleanliness. The same goes for cups, plates and such in the kitchen. However, if you are prepared to wash what you want to use in the kitchen you are free to cook and keep your costs at a minimum while staying at this hostel. The owner has a dog who lives in the reception - and you the smell of the labrador is quite noticeable. That being said, the common area definitely has a homey feel - and it is easy to relax and make yourself at home.

Room Tip: Avoid the Mary Shelley. The other rooms seemed less smelly and was lighter and more inviting.

I was in Cusco for about 6 Months, 2 of them I stayed in the Hostal "Frankenstein". In the beginning it was really nice. Because I´m german aswell I had a great understanding with the owner Ludwig.
The only Problem was his wife, who blamed me for teeling money out of the fund. They called the Police and tryed to tell them that I had drugs in my room. So the Police looked through all my stuff (but of course they didn´t find anything), and then they took my labtop until I payed the money back which I never stole. It´s not funny beeing in a foreign country and having the police threaten someone with their maschinegun...
I recommend everyone to make a wide arc around the wife!!!

We thought to save some money and stay at this hotel, but we really regreted it and moved to another hotel for our second night. First of all the hotel is dark, gloomy and cold! We were placed in one of the rooms at the top meaning it was probably the coldest! We asked for a heater for the night, but it was making so much noise, it was impossible to sleep without earplugs. Also, in the middle of the night we decided to change the orientatin of the heater as it wasn't heating our room properly, and thats when it just stoped working. We had to sleep in all of our clothes including our hats. They say it has hot showers, well, ok the water got warmish for about 5-10 minutes, but then it went back to cold. There is no tap in the sink with hot water either (but then again, in Cuzco we didn't see a single hotel with hot tap water). The room was also pretty old and had that old smell to it. There were no breakfasts. I would not recomend anyone to stay there.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in July 2011. The Hostal appears quite dark and gloomy (hence the name Hostal Frankenstein) when you get there but it has great character and we got one of the top rooms which was really nice and bright and got a lot of sunlight.
The owner is incredibly helpful and makes you feel at home. He let us leave our luggage there when we headed off to Machu Picchu for a few days and he also let us hang out all day when we had to wait until late evening to catch an overnight bus.
Has Wi-Fi and use of the kitchen and is also in a good location.
Would definitely recommend this Hostel.
