“Great hotel, great location”
Reviewed September 15, 2011

This hotel is two short blocks away from the main square (Plaza de Armas). The staff was wonderful, The breakfast was one of the highlights of our trip - we looked forward to the fresh squeezed orange juice each morning. They have fruit, toast, eggs, coffee, etc. The atmosphere of the hotel is nice, and the central courtyards are quint and picturesque. They offer free water and coca tea all throughout the day - you can help yourself! The rooms were nice, and came with a cozy space heater for cold nights. Room service was good too. I loved the colonial styling of this hotel. They have a shuttle for airport pick-up, and they are next door to a Citibank ATM and SAS Travel (who we booked our day tours with).

Room Tip: We had two rooms here, and both were great!

This hotel far exceeded my expectations. The manager David, was extremely attentive. He showed us around the rooms so we could choose the most suitable. The beds are very comfortable - I believe they are all orthopaedic beds. They have done an incredible job of restoring and refurbishing this old Colonial mansion.
There is cocoa tea available at the reception - and breakfast and hotel transfers are included. The rooms are generous in size - very clean. The location is very central - close to the Plaza de Armas and shops.
We were met at the airport - we stayed a night and left the next day for a trekking trip organized by SAS Travel (they are affiliated to the hotel) and returned three days later.
I would fully recommend this hotel - it is absolutely suitable for honeymooners, family, anyone who likes to experience a . A very warm ambiance - big rooms. Absolute value for money.

Room Tip: A magical place

I stayed at this hotel last week on two separate occasions. After time in the Peurvian jungle and after the IncaTrail/MachuPicchu visit. What a welcome relief it was to have a comfortable, relaxing place to rest my body and rejuvenate my spirit! The staff was very helpful and kind and held my bags for me between excursions. Breakfast was fresh and delicious. The courtyards have intricate stone patterns on the ground and are decorated all around with pretty flowers. The room was spacious for one person with a large shower and bed and lovely cotton linens. Free airport transport was included. The hotel is strategically located between two main plazas in downtown Cusco - easy walking anywhere. I would stay here again and again.

I was here with my dad for several days to get accustomed to the high altitude (Cusco is at 3600m... you'll feel dizzy getting of the airplane!) before going on the Inca Trail. Hotel Marqueses is a charming old hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast is nice as well. Don't expect five star luxury (of course, it's not a five star hotel and the price isn't five star high either!), but it's a great place to stay.

If there's one negative, it might be that the rooms can be a bit chilly at night -- the doors aren't very well insulated. However, there is a heater in the room, so you can always turn that up.

Wonderful old colonial hotel. Every detail was antique and wonderful. The only negative is that it's not very insulated so you can hear your neighbors and the rain, which in Cusco is very common.

The doors are also not very secure, as the lock is a turnkey from ages ago. However, even as a single female solo traveler, I felt very safe.

You should try to bargain if you come to this place independently. Prices don´t seem to be fixed. The hotel is charming, located in an old colonial house. Some rooms don´t have windows, only rooflights. Lobby and breakfast room are very nice but cold (Cusco is a cold place).

To give this hotel some credit, I will share some positive things, but please read on, especially if you have mold allergies! My husband and I were excited to return from our 5 day Salkantay Trek and get a good night's rest at Hotel Marqueses. Our hike was put on by SAS Travel, which is connected to/owned by the Hotel Marqueses folks. We had been in the hotel lobby area on a few occasions while we checked in to SAS Travel next door so we caught a glimpse of this old hotel. The courtyard was quaint with a waterfall, cobblestones, surrounding big wooden doors and overlooking balconies. It was right downtown too so the location was within walking distance to the plaza and lots of restaurants. Right before we left for the hike, we put a reservation in so we'd have the room reserved when we got back. Upon arrival at about 8pm, we were exhausted and all we wanted to do was pack up and get some rest before our 7am flight back to Lima. After a somewhat bad experience in Aquas Calientes with the lodging at Hostel Viejaros, which had lots of black mold all over the ceilings in the bathroom, my husband who is VERY sensitive and HIGHLY allergic to mold due to his asthma knew as soon as he walked into the Hotel Marqueses bedroom that it too was filled with mold. We went down to the front desk to let them know and they gave use keys to a different room. Again, upon entering the second room, there was mold throughout again. There was no way he could do another night sleep in a mold infested room as he was already just days away from getting pneumonia from the first night sleeping with the mold. We packed our bags up and went to the front lobby to inform them that we could not stay there. However, this is where the struggle began. They told us that we would still have to pay because we reserved the room. The attendant called the owner to discuss after we demanded and the owner refused to drop the charges. Exhausted, we continued to fight it, he called again and finally after about 15 minutes and explaining how we just spent over $1,000 with SAS Travel, they agreed not to charge us. It was quite an awful and disappointing ordeal to go through with little to no flexibility on account of THEIR maintenance of their building. We ultimately got a taxi and returned to Hotel Sonesta, where we started our trip in Cusco, as we knew this place was clean, free of mold and recently renovated. Highly dissappointed. Wish it worked out better.
