Oorikancha (Koricancha) the Temple of the Sun was one of the holiest sites in Peru. It was destroyed by the Spanish in the 1530’s. The convent of Santo Domingo was built on its ruins. There are a lot of interesting things to see in both the convent and the surrounding grounds. There are several examples of the current structure being built on the old one as can be seen with the “L” shaped foundation stones. Also amazing are the finely cut stones that fit perfectly together. The arched courtyard is reminiscent of those I’ve seen throughout Spain. There are nice views of the surrounding city and mountains.
