This monastery is important because it rests on top of the holiest place in the Inka empire, the temple of the Sun. When the Spanish conquered the Inka, they destroyed most of the Inka complex (but not all), and built their Dominican church right over it. The site has been restored to show the remains of this complex and it is quite moving to learn how this all happened.
The site does not offer professional guides, but we found some lingering outside the door. One who spoke some English was pushed in our direction, and we hired her, although she wore no credentials. We believe she did justice to the basic history, although there were some gaps, and, in the end, she fudged on the negotiated price, but we let it go.
This is a must-see for those who want to understand the enormous impact of the Spanish invasion and conquest of the Inka kingdom.
