“Must see ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2014 via mobile

If you have time to do only one thing within the town limits of Cusco, let it be this. They don't allow you to take photos inside but I guess that allows you to concentrate more on the awesomeness of all that it inside.

The layout. The alters. The carvings. The gold. The silver. The paintings. The sculptures. All of it : totally amazing!

My personal favourites are the depiction of the Last Supper (where the fruits were tropical and guinea pig were being on the table) and the story behind the black Jesus.

I think it also made a difference that I had a really knowledgable guide which was able to explain to the group just how wonderful the place is.

A real must-see!

“An art Treasury”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2014

The Cusco Cathedral has three actual churches; St Francis, Cathedral and Holy Family. All are wonderfully finished in carved wood, and precious metals almost all done by local artisans of the time. This is not as grand as some European Cathedrals, but it rivals them nonetheless. Photos are prohibited within the building. The large Crucifix over the altar shows a black Jesus. This is because of oils used on the wood. It is quite beautiful! Once a year on the Monday before Easter the Crucifix is taken in a procession for about 6 hours around the old center of Cusco. I was fortunate to have been there for the event and got great photos.
