Really liked Cusco so much that our three day stay turned out to be a five day. I didn't know what to expect but this was a pleasant surprise. It has a little of everything, old world charm and new world amenities, such as Starbucks and McDonald's and yes KFC. The plaza is always fun to sit and people watch. There is also a double decker bus that will take you around the city and out of the city. Check it out.

Skip Lima on your way to Machupicchu and spend more time in Cuzco. The town is relatively safe and caters for the tourists very well. There is an endless list of things to do and great shopping and restaurants. I visited Sep 2013 and only had three nights stay. I wished I had a bit more time to fully discover the town and surrounding area.

What makes it stunning is the sorrounding buildings. The imposing cathedral, the colonial two-floor buildings (it can be a challenge to find the right door to access the place you want on second floors), the narrow and steep streets, the floor (stones are beautiful, asphalt is ugly), and of course, the mountains. Specially at night, enjoy the view of those mountains full of lights.
The bad news is that american chains are already there. I liked the Starbucks though. McDonald´s and KFC... it's a pity.

Beautiful architecturally and the locals are wonderful.
Do not miss this area. Especially in the rain (which doesn't last long) it is gorgeous.
