Plaza de Armas is the center of tourism for Cuzco. Sit down on a bench and the street vendors will swarm you. They literally line up to push whatever it is they want to sell. They don't readily accept "no". We are very glad we stayed in a different part of Cuzco and could experience the "real" city.

We visited Cusco and were lucky enough to be there for Inti Raymi. While I understand this area can be a huge tourist trap, the area was flooded with locals celebrating leading up to Inti Raymi. Each night high school kids performed traditional dances in the Plaza. My husband and I loved the energy. I would recommend going in June for the festival.

It's the place to go when you're a tourist which isn't really my "thing". Most of the city tours start there with a tour of the Basilica so it's inevitable. The shops are expensive and the people selling anything and everything are fairly relentless. You have to go there at least once during the day and then again at night but that's more than ample.

The plaza is a hive of activity. From people selling 'art', keyrings, hats, scarves, shoe cleaning and much more to the buzz of traffic and the amazing surroundings of the Andes. The plaza is everything I expected Peru to be. It's easy to pass a couple of hours here just people watching and taking in the atmosphere. The plaza is surrounded by shops, some great restaurants, the Church and the Cathedral.
