Seems like this is the place to start any tour in Cusco. Cabs definately know how to get here. Get ready for street peddlers to approach you but just say "no gracias" and they usually leave you alone. Cabs leaving the plaza, especially after dark or raining, cost more (sometimes double) than arriving. There are plenty of shops and restaurants surrounding along with narrow cobblestone streets. Excellent views

The forefathers were right, there is something mystical about the way sunlight hits in the square. 'Went to Sunday Mass at the Cathedral. Some cafes, lots of browsing. Always felt like there was action just around the corner. Actually the side streets were better for finding some shade from the high-altitude sun. Once, coming around a corner near the square, about two dozen uniformed, shielded officers came marching in a line ahead of me -- it was a demonstration! Actually, it was very peaceful and not the dangerous thing I might have imagined, they were asking for high pay for educators, and they weren't getting too out of hand, because it was a school presentations in the square with kids in uniforms and band music. Demonstration doesn't mean riot. There are lots of street sellers, but a person selling their own art is completely different from selling plastic things made in another country, really.

I was several time in Cusco and really like the athomosphere at the main place in Cusco. It's a brilliant place for just being and observing the things going on around. But be prepared for all the sellers!!

as expected, this lovely spot is where everyone - locals and tourists alike - spend their time. There are plenty of little restaurants and cafes overlooking the square. I went to Cappuccino Cafe as well as the BBQ joint and had a nice time.

You have to come through here on your way to everywhere. Check out the Cathedral and the Jesuit Church and absorb the atmosphere. Just don't stand still for too long or you'll get pestered by endless art and trinket sellers.

Try to avoid eating here or staying here - the square is noisy at all hours, the food and drink is mostly overpriced compared to other parts of the city, and the vendors and peddlers will not give you a moment's rest.
