If in Cusco, this is a must see "ruin" although without a guide, it won't makE a lot of sense. The rocks are huge that formed Sacsayhuaman. Big open fields. Interesting grounds. Not much more than rocks, formations and wide open fields. You can explore the entire place in an hour. You do get nice views of the city. Make sure you go through the caves that Are off to the side. Very interesting.

We visited Sacsayhuaman twice while in the Cusco area. It was part of our intro city tour. Then, we returned for the Inti Raymi festival. It is an interesting site and a good introduction to the region. I would definitely recommend going on a tour with a knowledgable guide to explain the significance of the ruins and the architecture.

The Sacsayhuaman is, in reality, an archaeological complex with different sites. The one they call Sacsayhuaman is the largest one and they say it used to be a fortress, other say it was a religious site. The place is well preserved and is interesting to know more about inca architecture and building skills. But, besides that, there's no information regarding the areas - you need to hire a private guide and, although they're not expensive on site, some of them just made up information, especially because there wasn't an incan written language registering its history.
Anyway, it's near Cusco and a nice place, with beautiful views from the city.

As well as the marvellous Inca ruins where you can see the typical angled Inca stonework, the views over Cusco were fantastic.
