This is NOT a military fortress! It is a sacred temple site guarded by the most astonishing network of hand carved limestone butresses - it has no equal anywhere on the planet. To miss this site is to miss the most important place in Peru.

We walked from the top down this very open site. We had a guide who explained the very interesting history of the site. Without him we wouldn't have known the history.

Such a big site its hard to get perspective. Close to Cuzco so include it while staying there. Take a guide to fully appreciate.

We walked up from Cusco, it took about 30 minutes. We hired a guide at the site (would not recommend site without guide), who offered us a shorter or longer option; we chose the longer option and were very glad of it. The first half of the tour (the shorter option) was your "standard" Inca ruin stuff - fabulous walls, huge stones, awesome doors/windows, Puma paw in the wall, etc. But the second half (across the "field" from the "main" part of the ruins) was wonderful, and totally had not come on my radar even after having done research in advance. It was like an Inca playground, with slides, caves, tunnels, grottoes; really wonderful. Nice views of Cusco from here. We walked to Q'Engo from here, but it is not marked, not obvious, not clear on the tourist map. If memory serves, there are two roads out, we took the one on the right (the guide can point you in the right direction); at the split in the road, stay to the left and Q'Engo will appear shortly on the right.

Fantastic ruins, beautiful vistas and with a guide you learn all about this beautiful Inka place....worth hiking up higher than the crowds and looking at the gigantic blocks that were carved and placed. Amazing culture and great opportunity to see the past.
