“A good hotel close to the center”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

This hotel is very well located close from shops and from the center of this old and very nice town. Rooms are equipped with good bed, the hotel is very clean with a very good restaurant.
Employees are very gentile and open. Several people speak well English. All issues you can meets are solved quickly with efficiency.

Very much enjoyed our one night stay here after our Macchu Picchu adventure. Rooms were the best on the trip and my four year old son loved it.

Breakfast is standard buffet affair but everything is there, the fresh omelette I had was excellent.

I would stay there again and only a five minute walk from central Cusco.

When we first arrived we were a little worried, one half of the hotel is still under construction so it didn't look very promising. However, after being helped out of the taxi and offered coca tea and a fruit smoothie drink (before we'd even got out our passports or credit cards), we soon learned that our first impressions could not have been more wrong.

Check in was fast and painless, the staff spoke perfect English but enjoyed it when you greeted them in Spanish. They were very friendly and professional.

Our room was larger than we expected with a lovely bathroom (very modern shower head and basin) and the beds were VERY comfortable.

A cable channel menu by the bed and loads of lovely soft comfy pillows (I love a lot of pillows!) made this heavenly to come home to after a hard day exploring Machu Picchu and the Cusco surrounds.

We had to catch a train from Poroy (about 20mins out of town) to go up to MP, the hotel arranged this taxi for us and the driver even picked us up from the station when we returned at 10pm that night (with a little sign and everything!). Yes, we may have paid a little too much for the cab, but you're talking the difference between $10-20US, not a deal breaker and it's nice to have someone pick you up at the end of a long day. Also, you might get hassled a bit at Poroy station by local cabbies if you haven't arranged transport and this could be annoying for you. Again, the hotel staff were awesome.

We ate dinner (late) at the hotel one night and it was MUCH better than the tourist restaurants up in Cusco and about the same price (so not the usual extortion rates you expect at most hotel restaurants). Again, the wait staff were professional, attentive and helpful with suggestions.

The only thing to watch for is the construction, we didn't experience it much but on our last day there, we did hear a bit of banging in the morning. Don't let this put you off though and just request a room away from the construction.

The BEST thing about NOT being too close to Plaza Del Armas is the quietness of this location. Many cabbies and locals have car stereos cranked up very loud until all hours of the morning. You don't get this issue where this hotel is located, I'd be surprised if you got any sleep up by the main plaza.

It's a 5min gentle walk up the hill to all the action or you can take a cab, very cheap. We walked home every night, many times after a lot of drinks and never felt unsafe at any time.

We really enjoyed our time and would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask to be away from construction or the road if possible.

What one needs when travelling is a comfortable room that's neat and clean and inviting to come back to after a day on one's feet. And that's what I found at the Sonesta. The rooms are quite spacious, the beds very comfortable. The night view of Cusco from our window was amazing.
The staff are great and coca infusion (helpful in high altitude) always available. The hotel is a bit away from the main attractions, but all it takes is a short cab to anywhere in the city. The artisan market, with all kinds of handicrafts is right across the road. So if there's any last minute shopping to do, it can be done here. Breakfast, though not a grand spread is good, especially as there are eggs to order.

Room Tip: Try for a room facing the city to enjoy the city view. Cusco looks beautiful at night.

Clean, modern rooms with good bathrooms. Breakfast buffet was fair relative to other comparably priced hotels in Peru. Location is a bit aways from Plaza de Armas, but it is a very short taxi ride (5 soles) to hotel. It is across the street from artesan market and train station for Machu Picchu.

The Sonesta brought me back to my youth. We lived in an old home as child and we had to be sure that no one was flushing the toilet when taking a shower because the water temperature would get hot. That is how it felt whenever my girlfriend or I took a shower. The water would be just how we liked it and then change to hot and then to cold many times during each cleaning session. It was quite an interesting way to start the day.

The rooms are small. There was not enough room to move around with two people in and two large suitcases. There was only enough room to put one suitcase away.

Our window looked into our neighbors window. We had to close the shade at night or when dressing. We were on the third floor. We looked down on a corrugated tin roof. Lower we could see broken appliances on the ground.

The rooms were clean and made up each day promptly. The bathrooms were clean. I had a cold and did not have tissues in the room. The front desk was called and they responded promptly to my request.

We had a breakfast buffet every morning with a good selection of food. Everyone liked it. Many times the food was not replaced on time even when the staff were asked three times to do so. The same goes for coffee mugs, glasses and utensils. The breakfast buffet was understaffed. The mugs were a problem in the front lobby too. The serve complementary coca tea. The only problem was that the mugs were rarely there to enjoy it.

The hotel is 4 uphill blocks from the Plaza de Armas. If in shape it is an easy walk. Remember the altitude is about 11,000 feet in Cuzco. The handicraft market is across the. A very good place to find souvenirs

The establishment is listed as a 4 star hotel. It is not that. It is an adequate place for a good nights sleep.

The Sonesta Hotel is a hotel with a potential to provide better servIce if will solve the construction noise and to establish a shuttle to the main square where all restaurants and stores are. The distance is about 7 large blocks that by night is not a good choice. The front desk service needs to be overall better prepared for tourist needs. However, there is a desire to help with little knowledge. Breakfast was good as well as service. Room service was also good which is a plus after a long walking/hiking day. Room and bathroom are in good shape and a balcony is a plus with great city view. Don't forget that for 3 soles (1 us dollar) you can reach the main square and there is a large store with souvenirs a cross the street grom the Sonesta Hotel (best prices in town).Taxis are available all the time and are inexpensive.
