“fun, but short train ride”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

I got a chance to ride the Expedition from Ollantaytanbo to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu station).
The train big windows filled the cart with lots of light and the opportunity to enjoy the scenic route.
The train goes at a leisurely pace where one can enjoy traveling along the valley.
The best side is on the left heading up. At first great views on both side, then the right side is just rock while the left side offers a great river view.
The staff on the train are polite and service good.
A small snack and drink is offered. They also offer books and music CD's.
The only fault is due to train track condition if you are staying in Cusco you can't catch the train from there. Peru rail will bus you to the Pachar station. This results in 1.5 hours of your train ride on a bus instead of the train.
I rode the Vistadome on the return trip and to me there was really no difference on the ride, food or service.

Dear Mr. airlink9972,

We would like to thank you for your comments and for taking the time to share them with the Trip Advisor community. We are glad you had a great time aboard the Expedition train and that you enjoyed our service. We are continuously working to provide our passengers with the best possible service, especially nowadays that we are suffering with the serious weather conditions that force us to use the bus service and not our regular train service. Once again, thank you for your preference with PeruRail and we hope we can have you back again soon for another great adventure with us.

Best regards,

The Expedition Team

“Expedition train”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

I have mixed feelings about this train ride. It is not very organized for boarding, everyone seems to be worried they will miss their train, and the luggage issues - also it is not a real comfortable train. But, the experience is worth it - although if you can afford one of the more expensive options, in this case I would say go for it. Also, the view, as ever in Peru, is outstanding.

“Email about the tracks before deciding”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

We bought tickets to Machu Picchu. The ride was fine. It was beautiful and offered lovely views. The meal was similar to one you would receive on the airplane.
Why I give it a poor review is this. They emailed us a week before we were to set off telling us in the raining season they take a bus half way and then we pick up the train.

Buses are fine, but that is not what we paid for. I would simply recommend contacting the company so you know what you are getting into and maybe ask if there is a price difference?

“Decent train, but poor operation & communication”
Reviewed April 5, 2013

The train service was adequate, but the operation & communication was extremely poor for the price paid. Our train from Ollantaytambo was supposed to leave at 7am, and only one of the three cars showed up. There was no announcement or any information available at the station, and only after waiting an hour with many confused passengers did we finally depart.

When we didn't arrive in Aguas Calientes as scheduled, our guide called PeruRail & the company did not know about the change in schedule, causing further confusion for our trip. Luckily, all of the locals we discussed this with expect this from PeruRail, so they were able to adapt to the mess.

Poroy train station outside Cusco was not accessible due to heavy rains, but the company did provide a seamless bus service back to Cusco, which helped make the return trip less frustrating.
