I cannot compare the windows or the seats to the backpacker train, but I have heard rumors that the backpacker train does not include the fashion show. All I wanted to do was sleep on the train ride back to Cusco, but it was impossible because of the ridiculously loud music. If the backpacker train does not include the fashion show, I strongly encourage taking that train back. It will be dark and you won't be able to enjoy the views from the windows anyway.

We took the Vistadome train from Ollanta Station to Aguas Calientes. It is a 90 min train ride with the most breathtaking views. The train has windows on the ceiling as well as the sides. This gives you a full panoramic view of your journey.
The service is excellent. On the way back they have a lovely fashion show of Peruvian clothing. It's done by the train staff and they make it fun by having the passengers participate. Our attendant Sixto was really good and got the crowd to partake in the show.

Whilst this is a very pleasant and relaxing trip, with great views, the whole Macchu Picchu experience left me feeling a bit like the Peruvian authorities had a drip line into my wallet, ie everything is very expensive, ie $77 for the train each way, $62 for MP/Wayna Picchu, $10 for a sandwich, $10 each way for the bus. Of course you want to experience the whole thing, there's only one MP and it is magnificent, but you can't help thinking that that you're being taken advantage of. Hope they don't kill the golden goose, such as with the Puno-Cusco train which now costs about $300, forcing most tourists to travel by bus. However it is very well organised and it runs on time. Bear in mind that you are only allowed hand luggage, but some bring the whole caboodle and it's juts a matter of chance which type pf train you get and whether there is sufficient storage space. On our return trip they just stacked it all up against the emergency exit so no problem space wise.

We travelled on the vistadome from macchu piccu to cusco. collecting our tickets in the cusco main square office was an ordeal. The girl we were dealing with was short tempered, rude and very unhelpful. My bank changed the card I purchased our tickets with just before leaving our home country which meant I couldn't provide her with the last four digits. In her defense their paper work does state that you need this, however we had three other cards with the same name, passport, international driver permit, home country drivers lic for ID. She was 100% unwilling to budge despite me clearly being the correct person. Some may call it fraud protection, but for a domestic 4 hr train I call it belligerent. I had to phone international just to get the last four digits of this old card - as if that's got anything to do with ID checking next to the several other forms we had there I mentioned.

The train itself may have windows in the roof but lets be honest, what is seen through the roof 95% of the time - that's right, the sky. This is the only difference between expedition and vistadome trains structurally.

The food was a major let down. We received one plate with (seriously) about ten peanuts, three slices of cheese, a few raisins, some tomato with a drink of water/soft drink/juice etc. no further food was available. Also, beer or wine were not available.

Then the fashion show. They dress up their staff in different alpaca tops and parade them down the aisle for about 20-25 mins as a "fashion show". It was funny, as intended, but you can't miss the real reason for having this show - which is to fleece the customers further with those extra things they failed to purchase while on their wonderful holiday. Very very tacky, and prices of these items are, of course, highly inflated. After the show you can forget about getting any assistance from the staff (not that they can give you anything other than coke or juice anyway) as they are tied up with transactions of alpaca tops for quite some time.

Is a four hour trip total macchu piccu to cusco, the last 1.5 hrs of this were spent on a bus. This is unavoidable due to track maintenance after the wet season.

All in all yes it's a reliable service, but don't swallow all the "luxury" statements so easily. Vistadome is heavily advertised as luxurious but it sure as hell isn't. Peru Rail is also foreign owned, not by Peruvians. Try Inka Rail.

This train ride is only about 2 hours long. The seats are comfortable but is having a sheet of glass above your head plus a snack meal (similar to airline food) really worth the extra fare? I don't think so. The train is no faster and if its a sunny day (as it was on the day we travelled) you have to put on a sun hat. They also play piped Andean music on the carriage which is to loud so you end up shouting at your neighbours and soon the carriage is too noisy.
Save your money and take the standard train.
