“Best Flashpacker hostel in Cusco!”
Reviewed June 23, 2014

I stayed at Sunset House for a week back in May. The hostel is very charming with colorful rooms, a nice little patio, well-equipped kitchen, solid wifi and a very friendly and helpful owner. They definitely have the best hot shower in Cusco!! That shower alone was worth my entire stay :)
This is a great deal for travelers wanting to enjoy the best of San Blas, great cost-benefit considering the centric location! Will recommend to anyone traveling to Cusco.

This hostel didn't add to our experience in Cusco at all, but it also didn't hurt it. It was clean, simple, and quiet. It didn't have a lot of character -- just a place to sleep. Sunset house would be a good option for someone who doesn't have any down time and only needs a clean, safe place to sleep.

I must mention that Manuel (the owner/manager) was very nice and accomadating.

Also, my husband and I went on a four day Machu Picchu tour, and I ended up catching a cold right when we got back to Cusco. Sunset House has a little living room that was empty the entire time we stayed there. Usually, I really like meeting fellow travelers in the common spaces, but at this time, I was grateful to make some hot tea, grab some snacks from the little mini market next door, and watch a movie in peace. My husband, who was feeling fine, bought a beer and joined me. It was what we both needed.

Normally though, I like a hostel that is in some way unique and is more lively while still being relatively quiet in the wee hours of the night. This one was good, but I literally did not meet one other traveler in the hostel.

Based on Trip Advisor reviews, I booked Sunset House. I really loved the location in the San Blas neighborhood. It's beautiful and quiet and peaceful and only about 10 minutes to the center, although I enjoyed spending time in San Blas. I also liked how quiet the hostel was and how kind Manuel, the owner, is. Downsides: the WiFi signal was pretty poor and the showers are hot but barely more than a dribble. I think in general finding decent showers in Cusco is a challenge, but as a girl with long hair, these showers were really a challenge. Other than that, I was pretty happy with my stay.

PROs:
+ friendly and helpful host (Manuel)
+ rooftop terrace (e.g., for breakfast ;-))
+ matrimonial room (enough space, heated by the afternoon sun)
+ WiFi (signal strength and was ok but not exceptional)

CONs:
- shower (only a warm drizzle, very small, no equipment to clean up after a shower (which one should do according to the rules))
- temperature in the whole hotel is really low (there is a constant airflow through the hotel due to unfinished walls)
- location (it's not that close to the center after all)
- breakfast is very basic and generally not included

We stayed at the Sunset House because of the great review it had gotten on Tripadvisor but we felt that those reviews only reflect the friendliness and helpfulness of Manuel (the host) and not at all the quality of the hostel. The temperature was the main issue we had at the Sunset House - the public spaces are freezing and the water in the showers is also not hot (and there is a very poor flow of water). We felt that after going on the Choquequirao trek we would need another place to stay to make sure that we feel comfortable not only during the day...

Room Tip: The matrimonial room (all the way in the back) gets sunlight in the afternoon, which heats it up qui...

Definately recommend staying here. Very close to San Blas, quite area, beautiful deck. Good internet. Great kitchen, fire place & movie area. Most of all the owner and manager has the best customer service we've had yet. Very friendly, accommodating & professional. Shower needs a little work, but Manuel is constantly improving the place. The duckdown quilts are the best after staying at many places with several heavy woollen blankets. Comfy beds. You'll be happy here!

Stayed in Sunset House based on the already good reviews we read on TA. I must say we are not disappointed. The hostel is quiet, clean and in a nice location in San Blas. The kitchen is small but sufficent for the hostel. The comunal areas - especially the roof terrace - are spacious and nice.
We stayed in the four bed dorm, the twin room and the matrimonial. All have shared bathrooms (that are really clean) and are appointed nicely. The matressess are among the best we encountered in Peru. The only downside to the hostel is the shower, which is an electrical one and therefore there is hotwater but not plenty of it.
But the best part of the hostel is the host, Manuel, who really ties the place together. For him nothing was a problem and he helped us with all the stuff we needed to do. He even got the bus tickets for our trip to Puno, while we were at Machu Picchu. When we came back sick (cold) from Machu Picchu he made us tea and was really nice and concerend. Over all we enjoyed our stay there and can recommend it without hesitation.

I stayed in the private room at this hostel and can warmly recommend it. The room was warm, carpeted with a comfortable double bed and cable television. The kitchen and bathroom facilities and the common living room are clean and well maintained. The building and location in the San Blas district are excellent, but what really stands out the most about this place is the phenomenal hospitality of the owner, Manuel. He's extremely knowledgeable and helpful in planning your activities in Cuzco, and while you're under his roof you feel like a guest in his own home.
