“NOT recommend SAS Travel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

Totaly agreed with previous posts that communication is a serious problem when booking tour via SAS travel.

We booked a Machupicchu for Explorers 3 Day/ 2 Night 3 months in advance and felt very very frustrating.
(1) When we email SAS for details of the tour, they are not answering our questions and we spent lots of time to email them for clarifications.
(2) SAS staff said the tour costs USD295 each, but charged us USD320 at the end.
(3) We do have option to Moray and Saltmines on day 1, but SAS staff said lunch is not included if we pick this option and try to persuade to us to go sacred valley instead.
(4) The SAS staff said lunch and bus tickets down to machi pichu on day 2 are excluded from our tour cost and we need to arrange by our own. When we shown him the itinerary, he said ok and then he arranged everythings for us finally.
(5) SAS staff confirmed train time back to Ollantaybo on day 3 at noon, but no such train schedule in accordance with perurail website.
(6) Transport from Ollantaytambo to Cuzco on day 3 do include in our itinerary and we reminded SAS staff for several times. However, we couldn’t see SAS representative at Ollantaytambo Station and we arranged transport by our own at the end.

“SAS and the Andes created the experience of a lifetime”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

We took part in the Inca Trail tp Machu Picchu on 2-5 June this year and we both had an absolutely fantastic experience from the beginning to the spectacular end of the trip. Our guides Jimmy and Juan Carlos were superb, they were on call 24 hours of each day and were always: supportive; motivational; educational; and ready with a smile. We really felt like a team. The co-ordinator (Ricardo) made our campsites for lunch, dinner and the evening so very comfortable. It all worked like a smoothly oiled machine. The food was plentiful and really tasty. I am vegetarian and often do not have much choice in restaurants but every meal was a delight, bravo to the chef. Our Chaskis were the backbone of the team (strong and reliable) quietly trekking past us to carry all the requirements for our comfort from one stop to the next. The final praises go to the administrative team in the Cusco office that brought all of us together with such efficiency for the trek of a lifetime. I would not hesitate to recommend SAS travel and we will certainly use them on our next trip to Peru.

“Cannot recomend using SAS for a Colca Canyon Tour”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2013

Mmm, where do I start??? Communication was a big issue with SAS - has been in the past if you read previous posts, and I was dealing with the owner, Robyn.

Wrong information given, eg. advised we would be picked up at 07.30 - 08.00am for our 3 day Colca Canyon Tour and reconfirmed it with Robyn, so imagine our surprise at 03.40am when we were woken at advised that our tour was here to pick us up - we had arrived the previous evening after a 36 hour journey from New Zealand. Luckily, we had repacked our packs the previous night but it was a bit of a scamble with now our early morning departure.

It became apparent that the tour was onsold or given to another company but SAS does not communicate with that company either. We were asked for additional money for entry into the Canyon - we refused to pay and showed documentation that it was included. The guide had to pay the entry. We arrived to see the Condors - was suppose to be on day 3 but this happened on day 1.

Ok, I live with that but what I cannot live with is a guide who can barely string 2 sentences of english together and if asked a question outside the rehearsed Colca Cayon repertoire, she was totally lost. Note, that our group was 2 native english speakers and 7 native french speakers, 5 of which could speak either basic english or spanish. If we were unclear on instructions or descriptions, she would revert to speaking spanish, thinking that it would make it all clear???. She was a lovely girl - warm and friendly, but not up to taking a english tour and I have doubts that she was equipped to handle a situation such as a medical - quite a reality on this trek as it is not a doddle (easy).

Arriving back in Arequipa, we were dropped back at 17.00pm on the day 3 but not at our accommodation as advertised but at some general point where everyone got off. The words used were 'this is the end of your tour, so you get off here and we can direct you to your accommodation'..... and we were directed to our accommodation.

The tour itself - accommodation and food, was fine and as per what was advertised but you could do it on your own.

The shining star is the accounts lady. We had cancelled our Lake Titicaca tour - prior to leaving New Zealand, as we wanted a bit more freedom. I ended up dealing with the accounts lady directly - using google translation, as I was not getting any satisfaction/responce from anyone else, including Robyn.

Simliar to the above review in feedback has been emailed to SAS/Robyn and I have been assured?? a thorough investigation was underway - I am still awaiting to hear the outcome. I was advised that some staff had left through sickness and pregnacy, so she had gotten involved with our booking. And I recieved a few other excuses along the way, when emails had gone unanswered.

Really cannot recommend this agency, well at least not for a Colca Canyon Trek.

“4D/3N Machu Picchu Inca Trail hike”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

When picking a company to do the Machu Picchu trek with it is nearly impossible to know which one to go for. After much research I decided to book with SAS Travel. Their service seemed to balance with the cost of the trip. We were very pleased with our choice. We booked online, paid a deposit, received lots of information via email about the trip and then when we got to Cusco we went into their office paid the remaining balance and got some further information. The office staff were helpful and gave us plenty of information about the trek and what we would need to take. The evening before the trek we me with our guides (Freddie and Cesar) and the other 14 people in our group. SAS have a rule that it is 1 guide between 8 tourists so although we were in a large group this didn’t really affect our experience as the guides split themselves between the faster walkers and the slower ones. Freddie and Cesar were fantastic - helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and never got inpatient with us! The porters that SAS hired were also lovely and did a fantastic job and I believe they were very well treated. The food was totally amazing too - how they cooked those yummy 3 course meals up the mountain I will never know!
I would not hesitate in recommending SAS for the Inca Trail hike and we had a great experience with them.

“Sas is wonderfful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2013

I recently returned from the Inca Trail with SAS travel and could not be more satisfied. I read many good reviews about SAS and one or two from years back which were less favorable. Robyn was our contact person by Skype and her husband David was in the office in Cusco and both were terrific. Our used was Hilbert and he is a university trained archeologist and really showed us the sites in a very knowledgeable fashion. All of the transfers and travel details were well organized. The food was excellent even for the vegetarian in our group. We stayed at the Marqueses hotel in Cusco which was nice but not super fancy but very serviceable. Do not be misled by the negative review which was from around 10 years ago but seems to pop up to the front.
