We stayed at two places in Cusco - a "5 star" property and the Tierra Viva Cusco Saphi. In hindsight, we should've spent the entire time at just the latter. The hotel was extremely comfortable and clean. Location and breakfast were good. Only complaint was that the wifi was sometimes spotty in the guest rooms, but there was a free business center where the desktops worked perfectly. Finally, Victor at the front desk in mornings was fabulous - the standard for great, caring, friendly customer service. Every day at a hotel should start out as well with Victor around.

We stayed at this lovely cozy hotel for 4 nights when we arrived in Cusco and then for another night after visiting Machu Picchu. It is located a 5 minute stroll downhill from the main square which was great. They provided us with a free pickup from the airport. Our check-in was quick and easy and they provided the essential coca tea whilst we did this, plus it was provided 24/7 if you wanted it. ALL the staff including Victor, Santos, Willy (plus many others sorry :-( !) were happy, friendly and so helpful with all of our requests, speaking excellent english too. They recommended lovely restaurants, great tours and even went the extra mile and surprised me with a lovely cake on my birthday. Our 1 bedroom suite was at the top of the property and it was very nicely decorated, extremely clean (as was the whole property) had a huge comfortable bed, and a really big bathroom with a tub and shower. They had thought of everything in this room and even provided an oxygen tank which my husband did need to use.
We would highly recommend this hotel and all of it's lovely staff who made our stay so perfect !

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get the 1 bed suite, room 212 it was well worth it !

Was presently surprised by my stay at Tierra viva saphi. In particular Louis, George and Betty made our trip memorable by their friendly nature and knowledge of the best restaurants around the square. I was particularly surprised when we had missed breakfast as we were not feeling well and we got a call to our room to ask if wanted something to be sent to our room. The only issue I have was that this hotel is about a 5min walk from the main sq and the rooms could use some ventilation and proper heaters. All in all the staff that I mentioned really did make us feel at home.

My husband and I stayed in the hotel for 3 nights and we loved it. They allowed us to check in early and stored our luggage for 3 days until we toured the Sacred Valley. When we came back our bags were waiting for us in the room. The staff was very very helpful especially Willy! He was always there for whatever we needed. Although some reviews note that the hotel is far away from the center, we didn't feel that way and walked to and from it everywhere in Cusco.

The staff here really made our stay very comfortable and pleasant. We actually stayed here twice, once during our initial arrival in Cusco and then again after we had returned from Machu Picchu. Both stays were excellent. All the staff we encountered were friendly and spoke very good English. Willie and Victor went our of their way to make sure we had a great stay. The rooms were comfortable and clean. Strong WiFi in the rooms. We had our best sleeps during our stay in the Cusco region at this hotel. Each room had plenty of space with modern amenities. They also stored our luggage during our hike to Machu Picchu which made things a lot easier for us. The breakfast was very good with a wide variety of food to satisfy everyone. Overall this is a great hotel and if I find myself back in Cusco, I'll definitely be staying here.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

We spent two nights in this hotel in May 2013. We booked it through www.booking.com as we managed to save money on the usual/advertised room rate (it's worth shopping around).

We spent some other nights in Cusco at different hotels (as part of a trip we were booked on) and this hotel was by far the best. We had just finished a four day Inca Trek to Macchu Pichu so it was so lovely to stay in a modern, clean and well serviced hotel. It was just what we needed.

The hotel is a very straightforward, flat, ten minute walk from the central plaza. We walked the route in the morning, daytime and at night. We had no safety concerns at any point.

We arrived with our huge backpacks on and as soon as we walked into the reception Willy, one of the hotel staff, was there to greet us. He instantly took our heavy bags and ushered us to seats in the lobby, serving us cocoa tea. He spoke great English and typical of people in Cusco, was very smiley and friendly. The other staff member, Viktor, spoke great English too. Both were extremely professional, but jovial. It was very welcoming. A lot of the other guests looked a lot more well kept (we were backpacking), but the staff didn't treat us any differently, which was nice.

You have to complete a bit of paperwork in order to check in, but that is line with Peruvian legislation. Make sure you don't lose the white tear off from the form you filled in upon arrival to Peru (at the airport). You need to show it to the hotel so that you don't have to pay 19% tax on top of your room rate.

Willy showed us to our room and explained how to use the safe, TV etc. We stayed in room 208, which was just up one small set of stairs. The staff carried our bags up for us. Although the room was 208, I think there are only 30 or so rooms max. We didn't really see too many other people.

The room is contemporary (arty displays on the walls, thick carpet, white walls) and the bed (we had asked for a double) was huge - I laid in the middle and couldn't reach both sides! It was extremely comfortable and warm. There were extra blankets and pillows available.

The TV had the equivalent to Sky (save for the movie/sport channels), with a number of channels in English, like E4 and Fox. There was also free wifi in the hotel, as well as two flat screen computers just outside our room and a printer - again all to use free of charge. The internet connection was fast (especially compared to the other free wifi we had experienced in other hotels).

The bathroom was quite spacious and again, quite modern. There was not a spot of dirt or mould. The shower was extremely powerful and hot water always available. There was a hairdryer available too. Shampoo, soap, conditioner and towels were provided. All of the towels and bedding smelt lovely, like they had been washed by someone rather than just the usual industrial machine wash!

The safe worked well and we had no problems at all with safety. We left a lot of our clothes/toiletries out (making the most of the space) and nothing was ever taken. The only possible downside to the room was that we couldn't open the actual window to let fresh air in - we could only open an inner window which led to the external window.

We used the laundry service and the clothes arrived ahead of schedule, neatly folded and smelling great. It only cost $4USD for up to 4kg. You can get cheaper on the streets of Cusco, but for the sake of saving 50p or something we liked the convenience of the hotel.

The hotel has a small courtyard where you can sit and enjoy the sun. There is a well stocked fridge there too. It isn't the cheapest, but it is convenient and had beers, water etc. You can charge them to your room.

Breakfast was included in our stay and although it looked small, there were lots of fresh, filling options: cereal (three types), strawberry yoghurt, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, sausages (the type changed each day), bread/toast/rolls/croissants/pastries, cheese, ham, juice (three flavours) and tea/coffee. You can have as much or as little as you like. We tried everything and it all tasted good! The tables are quite small and very close together. However, there is a little fireplace so the atmosphere is quite intimate and friendly.

The hotel offer a free airport pick up (it is about a 20 minute drive). As soon as we had made our booking they emailed us to ask what time we wanted to be picked up. Given that we would already be in Cusco we cheekily asked if they would take us to the airport upon checkout instead. They had no problem with this, which was really kind. They even communicated with us via email and in great English - something that is often taken for granted by travellers. The driver arrived promptly and took us straight to the airport as promised.

Overall, we loved our stay in this hotel and didn't want to leave. Cusco is an amazing place - far nicer than Lima (where most international flights leave/arrive), so if you're not sure how to split your time, spend most of it in Cusco. This hotel is in a great location - you can easily walk to the main attractions, you're near the shops and restaurants, but not too near that it is too noisey for a good nights sleep. Book this hotel, you won't be disappointed.

P.S. If you suffer with the altitude sickness during your stay (and the cocoa tea isn't helping enough) there are quite a few pharmacies on/around the central plaza where you can buy altitude sickness tablets - about £10 for tablets to last a few days. For those of you that don't realise, Cusco is quite high above sea level so many people experience altitude sickness.

Room Tip: 208 was a great, quiet double room
