“Amazing Hotel in Cusco!”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for two nights after returning from Machu Picchu. We had stayed at their other location prior and they had our bags waiting on us in the room when we arrived late that night. This location is very close to the main plaza and my husband and I loved it! The view from our suite was amazing! We stayed in room 401 and it was beautiful and large! We had originally wanted a normal room but they were sold out so we booked the suite and absolutely loved everything about it. Worth the extra little bit of money! We loved seeing all the tiled roofs, the twinkling lights at night, and the city view. The queen bed in our room was probably the most comfortable bed I have slept in. The staff was very helpful and beyond nice. They went above and beyond to help us locate our luggage that was lost by the airline. There was even a small patio right outside our door that we sat at often! Breakfast was great with lots of choices and the bread was to die for. If we ever return to Cusco I will stay here for sure!

Room Tip: 401 was Amazing!!!

great time in cusco at this hotel, best location, a few steps away from plaza de armas, we were picked up from airport as promised, no issues, coca tea on arrival, great staff, room 203 was nice, could not hear noisy bars or roads outside, like some people have commented on, soft beds, nice comforters, satellite tv, the bathroom had a minorly unpleasant smell, but just kept bathroom door closed and was fine, great breakfast in morning, they have good wifi in rooms and free use of computers as well, would def recommend

Room Tip: room 203 was quiet, they do have room heaters as well, a plus

We stayed here for 4 days prior to our Inca Trail hike.
The location was convenient, less than a block from Plaza de Armas. It is also along the path up to Sacsayhuaman. The rooms are not large, but they are cozy and decently comfortable. In acse it gets cold, there is a small room heater, and there is also a TV with channels in spanish....in addition to english, japanese and chinese. We stayed on the bottom floor (1) whereas the lobby was on 4, so it was quiet and we didn't have any issues with noise from the streets. Its difficult to climb all the stairs on first arrival (4 flights from room to entrance) but by day 3 or 4, we had gotten used to it. Good practice for Inca Trail?

Coca tea is available near the lobby all the time, great for first arrival, and just grabbing a cup as you go by. Breakfast is from 5-10AM, buffet style and has a good selection. It includes hot items like scrambled eggs, tamales, and sausages, as well cold items like yogurt, fruit, cereal. And of course there is coffee.

The complimentary airport pickup was great--people usually haven't figured out expected costs on first arrival and this saves travelers from having to haggle and figure out taxi rates.

Due to our very early departure for the Inca Trail, we were not able to enjoy breakfast, but they did pack a brownbag breakfast to-go to accommodate, which I think is great, although I wasn't a big fan of what they packed for me. If I had packed it myself I would have packed different things, and I would suggest for the picky eaters if they are in this situation, to take a look at whats typically available at breakfast and make 1-2 requests if there are certain things you want to eat in your packed bag.

The laundry service we used here was reasonable. My husband and I had a couple days of clothes washed for $14 USD, and if you get the laundry to them before 10AM, you will receive it back that evening by 7PM.

The best part I appreciated, besides them holding the luggage for us, was transferring our luggage to our next hotel when we returned from the Inca Trail. Due to the hotel being full, I had to stay at Tierra Viva Saphi when I returned. The Cusco Plaza location gave us luggage claim tags and had delivered our bags to the Saphi hotel so that we didn't have to drag the bags up several blocks ourselves when we returned exhausted from our 4-day hike, what a relief.

My main complaint, which has nothing to do with the wonderful staff, is actually the design of the shower stall in the room. When we showered the 1st 2 nights, water got ALL OVER the bathroom floor. Enough that it wouldn't dry on its own and completely soaked through the bathroom floor mat--its not pleasant going to the bathroom at night and having to step in cold water just to use the toilet. We eventually noticed, at least in our particular room, there is a ledge on both sides of the shower that slopes down towards the bathroom floor. I don't care how you pull that shower curtain, if the stall is not designed to keep water flowing back into the stall, the curtains can only do so much before water is going to make its way to the bathroom floor. We are engineers, yes we sat down and evaluated the design of a shower stall that bothered us. The good thing is that housekeeping will wipe up the water--unfortunately my husband and I do not actually like to use housekeeping on a daily basis so some days we dealt with a cold wet floor. This minor nuisance aside, I would still strongly recommend this hotel; it has location, service, convenience and comfort going for it.

Cusco is a charming city and being near the Plaza de Armas puts you within reach of all the most important places of interest, such is the case when staying at Tierra Viva Cusco Plaza Hotel. Its outdoor terrace offers a great view of the city and the hills which surround it. Booking at Tierra Viva Cusco Plaza Hotel means airport pick-up as well for those just arriving into Cusco.

Upon registering you'll be offered coca tea to help with the altitude sickness that can sometimes hit travellers just arriving, it slowly creeps up on you as it did with me and found myself asleep very early in the evening as my body adjusted to the the new height, but fully recovered and ready the next day.

Despite booking two different types of rooms, a single on the first stay and a double room on subsequent stay, both rooms were identical in size and style. The rooms are a good size however could be small considering there could be two in a room. Bathroom are modern and clean and two bottled waters are included.

Though all rooms have large windows, there is nothing to look out to, most rooms face into courtyards, and having your curtains drawn would mean disclosing everything inside. However most just pass through Cusco and a stay here is ideally located and comfortable, and staff ensure you get on your way on time and requested taxi bookings arrive on time and a price that is correct locally (be warned, taxi drivers will make you think they are offering a fair price, but in fact the actually cost is often less than 50% of what they quote you).

There are more upscale options to stay in Cusco but Tierra Viva Cusco Plaza Hotel is comfortable enough to enjoy and its location is ideal, considering the price too, its not a bad deal after all.

We stayed here after a full day of hiking Machu Picchu and travelling. Upon arriving, the hotel staff helped us out by printing our boarding passes for an early flight the next day. The rooms were clean, the bathroom was immaculate, and the bed was heavenly!

This hotel is also close to the main plaza.

I wish we stayed here longer!

We stayed in four locally owned hotels during our 15 days in Peru recently, and while we were very happy with all of them, the Tierra Viva hotel in Cusco was the most comfortable of them all - the beds had plenty of covers and pillows, and you didn't have to ask for extra blankets or for a heater. The hotel keeps these items in the room. We were very happy with our room's high ceiling and stylish decor. The staff was friendly, and the hotel was very helpful in setting up transport from the train and to the airport. The location was excellent. Unfortunately, a thundering discotheque is right next door, and the noise is horrendous. After the disco noise died down each night, a loud, belligerent drunk shouted in the street every night of our three-night stay - we saw him in a doorway on the street several times, and he seems to be a fixture. Moving from a room that is exposed to this noise may cause you to be placed in an inner room that has windows that look into the small interior courtyard, so you will probably have to keep your blinds closed and the windows closed for any privacy. The breakfast is very nice (starts at 5 am since many trekkers must leave early). I'd love to give this property a 5, but the surrounding environment makes this a poor choice for a restful stay. I would suggest hotels farther away from the plaza.

Room Tip: You should ask for a room away from the noise of the disco and the street. One of the inside rooms i...

Dear TySeattle,

Thank you so much for your comment and for having stayed at our hotel.

We are sorry that you did not have a pleasant sleep in our hotel that is a primary characteristic of Tierra Viva properties.

As you have mentioned in your review, our hotel has a really central location, just a few steps
from Cusco´s Main Square, and for that reason and our travelers suggestions, we have put a double sound proof system in all the rooms that face the street.

We cannot know exactly in which room you stayed in. Yet, reading your comment, we assume that was one of the ones that face Procuradores´ Street, where we have installed the double soundproof system and we have not received any noise comments after that. Thus, either you have stayed at our hotel before we installed the system or the window was not closed properly.

Once again TySeattle, thank you for comment and we hope you can try our hotels again in the near future.

We had a wonderful four night stay at Tierra Viva Cusco Plaza. The staff went out of their way to be accommodating and extremely friendly. The rooms are small, but well designed. Breakfast is plentiful and the hostess is very eager to please. The location is right off the main Plaza in Cusco, so you are close to all the sights to see. Restaurants are right around the corner. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this gem to anyone visiting Cusco.
