Description: Our kitchen offers both tradtional and avant garde cuisine, always focusing on rediscovering age-old recipes that allow us to take yesterday's flavors to today's table. Our specialty is Criolle and Andean cuisine where we highlight the essence of this beautiful mix of varieties that provides us with an endless array of flavors and that each Peruvian carries in their veins. In appreciation for all products we utilize we allow ourselves to play with new flavors and sensations based on the immense diversity of native products available: aji (Peruvian chili pepper), distinct passion fruits, avocados, rice and corn varieties are some of our favorites to explore with. Slow cooking dishes and the high flames of our grill are our favorite preparation techniques to use here at Marcelo Batata.

My wife and I were walking through the back streets of Cusco and stumbled onto the restaurant by accident. It was a pleasant find. We made a reservation because the menu just looked unbelievable and we were not disappointed. When we got our appetizers and meals good taste and quality I was simply impeccable. We had alpaca before coming here tonight, but none compare to the way this was prepared. We highly recommend this restaurant to anybody.

Located in the San Blas area of Cusco City this is one of the best restaurants in town. We sat inside which was a bit of a shame as the rooftop terrace is gorgeous but we still felt the ambience was good in the striking red and black themed interior.

The food was rich with plenty of sauce. Starters we had were duck prosciutto with goats cheese balls with a fruity sauce and nuts and an avocado and prawn cocktail with passion fruit coulis. Mains were Shrimp Moqueca (sautéed in garlic & lime with pepper, onions, coconut milk, paprika on a bed of rice) and Honey & Mustard Charbroiled Alpaca. With a bottle of wine and water this came to S197 (£45/$71)...very good value compared to home and I felt value for money in Peru as this is a top end restaurant.

My one complaint would be comfort. Due to the table having far too many legs than is normally required you couldn't get the two person sofa close enough to the table...this meant you were leaning forward the whole time. Both tables and chairs were very low as well making it difficult to get in and out when you needed to use the servicios.

That said, that isn't a reason not to go (unless you have a mobility problem in which case ask for a more appropriate table & chair combo - they are available) and I would definitely recommend this as a treat while you're in Cusco.

The food here was very good, but our overall experience was not. Even with a reservation, we were seated in an area that had low couches for seating......perfect if you were just having drinks, but very uncomfortable for eating. A television was blaring over our heads the whole time we were there which didn't improve the atmosphere. We also felt very rushed through our meal. We had hardly started our drinks before the appetizers arrived, followed quickly by our dinners. This wasn't typical of other good restaurants in Peru.

We were introduced to Marcelo Batata Restaurant by our guide, who recommended trying the alpaca steaks, and of course the guinea pig. The alpaca was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy with a wild mushroom sauce. Very well presented on the plate. The shrimp with coconut milk was also very good.

Now - to the guinea pig. I did not try it, however my husband did, and found it surprisingly tasty. If you can get past the critter on the plate with his teeth still in, you might want to give it a try.

The rooftop view at night was breathtaking.

This was our most enjoyable meal in Cuzco. Prior to dining, we requested to have appetizers and Pisco Sours on their "rooftop" overlooking the view of the mountains. It was a gorgeous beginning to a delicious meal. Their cocktails were stellar, with a wonderful selection of different flavored pisco sours. After enjoying the evening views, we headed down to the quaint restaurant. It was packed upon our arrival, but after our seating it seemed to clear out rather early. Our server was attentive, always ensuring we were comfortable and had everything we needed. This was our first introduction to Aji de Gallina and it was delicious. Two of us ordered that, and needless to say we pretty much licked our plates clean. One of our dining buddies ordered the alpaca steak which was a beautiful preparation of alpaca (although not my favorite choice of meat, it was wonderfully prepared). They have an open kitchen which provides an entertainment factor while dining. Overall, I would highly recommend making reservations for this place one evening while in Cuzco. If ever we return, we will definitely dine here again!
