Description: Our kitchen offers both tradtional and avant garde cuisine, always focusing on rediscovering age-old recipes that allow us to take yesterday's flavors to today's table. Our specialty is Criolle and Andean cuisine where we highlight the essence of this beautiful mix of varieties that provides us with an endless array of flavors and that each Peruvian carries in their veins. In appreciation for all products we utilize we allow ourselves to play with new flavors and sensations based on the immense diversity of native products available: aji (Peruvian chili pepper), distinct passion fruits, avocados, rice and corn varieties are some of our favorites to explore with. Slow cooking dishes and the high flames of our grill are our favorite preparation techniques to use here at Marcelo Batata.

The food at Marcelo Batata is amazeballs. The 'chef's speciality', alpaca, is succulent and delicious - try the salt and pepper alpaca for a true taste of the meat, or the wild mushroom or honey and soy sauces for a tasty alternative. The fruit frappes are a monstrousity of fruit and ice, piled high in a cocktail glass, and well worth it. My friends and I (9 in total) visited here twice because the food was so good and well-priced, and the service so good: the second time we went, one of our party's meals was delayed by 5 minutes, and she was offered a free beverage in apology. If you're worried, the menus are in English and the wait staff speak very good English too... I just can't recommend this place highly enough!

At first we wanted to sit in the main area but my girlfriend and I moved to the lounge area in front of the kitchen because it looked so comfortable -- it was. I couldn't have asked for better service on our honeymoon and I would have to say that this is the best meal we had in South America. The server wasn't too in - your - face and the kitchen was open and well kept. The food: Out of this world. Anyone who doesn't like Peruvian food is weird and THIS Peruvian food is amazingly styled. The lamb ribs were delicious, my girlfriend said her salad was incredibly fresh, light, but filling at the same time. They offered us a bottle of Peruvian wine which we were nervous to try but it ended up being amazing. THANK YOU for the dessert on the house for our honeymoon!!

Went to try this place out yesterday and really thought it was brilliant. The lemon grass chicken was fantastic as was the causa starter. The other comment on here in terms of not being impressed with their cocktails has to be a joke. They have loads of options for literally every taste and the server brought out three different types of Pisco for us to try before choosing what we want (we are picky customers). All in all, a great experience.

,After reading lots of good reviews we thought we would have an exciting gastro experience. We did not.

Pros : The menu sounded exciting and the service was good.
Cons : The restaurant was cold. The menu descriptions far outranked the reality delivered by the food. It was slightly off putting to have a crowd of tourists on a cookery course hovering about
The food : Disappointing reality - ' TheTaste of Andean potatoes' appitiser were just three tiny potato skins topped with cheese for $19. Not inspiring, and not even that warm. Out of the three dishes we ordered, one was sent back as the meat was very chewy, one meal was eaten but not particularly enjoyed. The third main dish had nice tender meat, but the sauce was sickly sweet and not to anyones taste at our table . It was supposed to the bbq and chilli, but tasted like pure honey.

The accompaniments included mashed potato but this was really just a tablespoon of potato. There were two other tablespoons of things on the plate which were not identified and not pleasant. What a shame.

The hygiene :
The kitchen is on full view to the restaurant. One of the chefs went to the loo and seemed to return to the kitchen without washing his hands. Our table had full sight of the only washbasin for the two toilets.

The tables: there are some benches at wooden tables near the bar area, but this area was being used by the tourists watching the chef/bartender make pisco sours. The other area next to the kitchen had low seating and lower tables, more suited to a relaxing drink, but we were sat here and found it difficult / uncomfortable to eat in this position. We ordered the special flavored pisco sours, but were not impressed.
