Owner description: We are an Cultural interpretation center about how the Andean people understand the skies. The explanation in two rooms give us a great perspective, in dome we learn about southern sky and finally, if weather allows, we enjoy some stargazing!

Great place to visit before visiting the inca ruins in Cusco! :) they are also very friendly and they offer you some coca tea and blankets if you feel too cold. Better to go visit around winter time where the sky is clearer.

If you even a passing interest in astronomy, science, or the advancement of the Inca civilization I highly recommend this site! You have to meet the van at the small square adjacent to the Plaza de Armas and then you will be driven to a remote location (don't worry!) about 15 min away. My wife and I were there with another family so it was a small gathering and quite cozy. It's best if you can aim for a clear night's sky for the star gazing but with the usual hectic travel schedules this is not always possible.

The staff there are passionate about astronomy and are very easy to talk to. They made a wonderful presentation and handed out blankets/hot tea as it is quite chilly at night. After the presentation they take you outside and show you different stars/constellations and how they were used by the Incas for predicting seasons, rains, etc. I actually got to see Saturn and the Moon through the telescope which was amazing. This is enjoyable for all ages.

The Cusco Planetarium is a delightful addition to the overall cultural experience found in this part of the Andes. My wife and I were delighted by the presentations especially the opportunity to view several southern hemisphere deep sky objects through the telescopes at the Planetarium site.

Of especial note is the care the presenters gave to describing Inka constellations, which are mostly "dark or black" constellations produced by dust clouds obscuring stars in the Milky Way. I would have preferred to hear more about those (the resident astronomer, Prof Salazar is an expert on Inka constellations and star knowledge). Northern hemisphere astronomy buffs should not miss the opportunity to see the glories of the southern skies....and so close to town (but with minimal light pollution)! Some of the astronomy knowledge presented (intihuatanas, the Oyanti pyramid, the Q'enqo "awakening the puma") will be invaluable in enhancing visits to nearby Inka sites including Tipon and Machu Picchu.

Our family of 5 were the sole visitors to the Planetarium Cusco one night during the first week of January. I had my doubts as our driver neared the site (and seemed to keep getting lost), but they were all dispelled from the moment we arrived. We were greeted by the staff of 3 with soft blankets and a cup of tea to ward off the chill night. We spent the next couple hours entranced by the presentation! When it ended we went outside and were thrilled to have a chance to see Jupiter through the telescope, even though the clouds were significant. Our 3-generation group learned a lot, and also appreciated spending time with people who so clearly love what they do. It was a very worthwhile side trip for us in Cusco.

You get picked up from the square besides the Plaza de Armes and it is about 15 minutes up to the location. Housed in a converted barn there is a talk on the stars and how they were used by the Incas (at least their best guess) followed by an interesting show in the small planetarium. The best bit was seeing the stars and moon through the telescopes outside afterwards.

The kids loved it. Just make sure it is a clear night. Expensive by Peruvian standards but not bad by western prices.

Thanks for writting your comments, we are very glad to hear about you and your family.
Even it is true as a visitor, booking last minute with an eye on the skies, proveides a better experience for you, we bot have the risk in not be ready to arrange the presentation on time or having transportation issues. On this seasson you can still contact us in advance, and confirm before 2pm the same day.
We would also like you to know that we got discounts on students and kids, as you know, but also for peruvians and cusqueños. We even have a social program in the morning for local schools, with a very. very low price. Even we have no outside resources, we believe it is important for local kids, having this kind of aproach to science. and we will keep doing it !
thanks again and don´t hesitage contacting us if you have and extra advice to us.
We hope you got a wonderfull time in our amazing country. All the best to you all!
