This is a great place to stay in Cusco. Down a quiet alley but within easy walking distance of the main square and San Blas. Inexpensive, comfortable and good hot showers. Mercedes, the owner, is fantastic and will help you out with any query and has a wealth of information. She even picked us up from the bus station, despite having to wait an hour because our bus was late. Just a great place to stay.

This is a great little hostel. It is located just off a fairly narrow but busy street in the San Blas area (the "artists quarter" with plenty of nice bars and restaurants nearby), just a 5 min walk from Plaza de Armas. I had a nice twin room with private bathroom, hot water 24/7. The staff are very friendly and will help out whenever you need it, from advice on places to visit, arranging tours, taxis, etc.

There is a great roof terrace offering fantastic views of the city and surrounding mountains, which makes for a nice bonus!

She even worried about us during our hike to Cuzco.

This hostel is great for the price. Mercedes, who runs the place, is very knowledgeable about the city and its history. She also speaks many languages, and is patient and attentive with those of us learning Spanish. There is free wireless internet, and a computer for public use. Breakfast is modest with coffee, juice, and bread (sometimes tamales!), which is perfect for the altitude. There are televisions in the rooms and hot water all the time. Also, there is a lounge area to enjoy chatting with other guests, or to watch sports or movies. The place is guarded all the time, and entrance can only be made by tapping on the door. Thus, I felt like everything was safe the month I stayed here.

If the highlight of travelling for you is the local people, then Hostal Girasoles (or Casa de Mama, managed by the same family) is the place to meet them! This haven of peace and privacy is 5-10 minutes stroll from the beautiful but touristy Plaza de Armas, which is immediately surrounded by tonnes of samey backpacker hostels that often have on-site bars pumping out music till the early hours. Great if you’re just passing through Cusco on a gap year and want to meet people quickly, but what Hostal Girasoles offers is a truly personalised service that will appeal to people staying for a few weeks or months as well as those staying just a few nights. I was there for 2 weeks total (one week at the beginning of my trip and one week at the end) - and the whole time I was travelling in Lima, the jungle and on Salkantay trek I was secretly looking forward to getting back to my newfound Peruvian family back at Girasoles! The hostel is in San Blas, easily the best part of town for food, artesania, bars and sheer picturesque beauty. Rooms are spacious and light, with huge windows offering views of the mountains and Cusco rooftops, everything is clean and bathrooms good with hot showers. There is free breakfast every morning so you can fuel up a bit before heading into town, and there is a large lobby area on the ground floor with a kitchen area, internet, a tv and sofas. For relaxing in the sunshine or taking your Spanish class, the roof terrace is a winner. But by far and away the best thing about Girasoles is the people who work there – Mama Mercedes is in charge and speaks English, Japanese, German and Italian in addition to Spanish. She’ll look after your every need, whether you’re in bed with soroche (altitude sickness), need advice on sightseeing, are hungry/thirsty, or just need a motherly chat and hug! Particularly great for solo travellers as Mercedes is a true Cusquena and also a former guide, so she is a fount of knowledge about the Sacred Valley and of course every nook and cranny of town. If you’re lucky her adorable kids may also be in residence – perfect for practising your Spanish! This place is great value and a great experience. If you happen to be looking for a room/building with more character and have slightly more to spend, then it’s simple – ask Mercedes if there’s a room at Casa de Mama (literally a treehouse, also located in San Blas)! Between both hostels this lady’s got the best of Cusco accommodation COVERED.
