If you want to truly experience Cusco I would highly recommend this hostal. You can stay in fancy hotels in any place in the world but you will miss the hospitality that only a TRUE local can provide.

LIDA (who doesnt speak English) was AMAZING! Extremely helpful! We arrived here having only memorised 30 Spanish words on the plane and that was all we needed to communicate with her!

The rooms are basic and small but clean.

Breakfast (bread, butter, jam and coffee with milk) is served everyday from 6am (and earlier if required, they go the extra mile) with fresh orange juice!

We met some amazing travellers here every morning at breakfast.

Me and my wife stayed here for 4 days in June 2010, in two different rooms (we left for 3 days to the amazon and returned).
The first room we stayed in was a ground floor matrimonial room. It has a private bathroom. The room was clean, but had a bit of a musty smell.

The second room we stayed in was a room with 3 beds on the second floor facing east. You get a good view of the center court yard, and lots of morning sun, although you could close the curtains if you wanted to sleep-in. It is a very quiet street making it easy to sleep-in after a tiring hike the previous day. This room was also very clean, and didn't have the musty smell of the first room.
In both rooms the bathrooms took a while to get hot water, but after a few minutes it was nice and hot.

Breakfast is bread, jams, teas and coffee. For some of our tours we had to get up at early hours, and they would make sure food was prepared for us.
Laundry service, and luggage holding is also available (we had them hold most of our luggage and souvenirs for 3 days while we were in the amazon).
They also arranged pick up to and from the bus station or airport.

The location is very good, pretty close to Plaza De Armas (even closer to 2 other plazas). We never needed to use a taxi from the hostel.

The family that runs the hostel is very helpful and friendly. You feel like part of the family when you are there.
They don't speak much English, and we don't speak Spanish very well, but we never had a problem comunicating.

Hostal Quipus service was excellent. Lida picked my brother and I up at the bus station and gave us a small tour of Cusco as we drove back to the hotel. She went over and above expected service by connecting us to her friend who washed our clothes overnight and delivered to hotel before our plane was ready to take off the next morning. Anything you needed, she would assist with.
You should know how to speak Spanish since English is limited. The rooms on the first floor offer more charm and less noise than the second. The showers are clean and hot, perfect for after hiking. The courtyard is charming and the distance to the square is minimal and convenient. Highly recommend.

We booked this hostel based on reviews from trip advisor. Overall, it was acceptable. The staff was extremely helpful and very friendly; the owner even came to the airport to pick us up. The rooms were basic, and comfortable. The hostel is a few minutes walk from the plaza des armes, and is in a quiet neighborhood. When we first arrived, our room was clean. However, when we came back to the hostel after our Inca Trek the room had not been properly cleaned after the previous guest. The open space is nice to relax in.

There were such good reviews on Trip Advisor that we made a reservation for three nights at this hostal. We only stayed one night. The staff was very nice and helpful. The room needed painting badly. The toilet seat was not connected to the toilet. The sheets were clean but the blankets were very old. The room was small with two beds. The doors had to be locked with a pad lock and you could see outside where the doors came together. You could also hear the other guests in the nearby rooms when the toilet was flushed, etc. The pillows were the hardest pillows I have ever used! The whole feeling of the room was just kind of worn. At breakfast we sat for quite a while before we finally got tea, bread and jelly. The area where the hotel is was fairly quiet but not as interesting as other parts of town and felt not as safe. We felt bad leaving as we had reserved for three days but just did not feel comfortable. We ended up moving to another part of town and paying twice as much for a room ($50) but it was the best decision we made.

If you are just looking for a budget place to stay, this would work and I do have to say the the staff were really very nice and helpful.

The hostal is located at 10 min walk from the Plaza des Armas, the area is quiet. After a day of walk, it was the perfect place to relax and plan the rest of the trip by drinking the mate de coca and using the Interne in the patio. The room was simple and the share bathroom is shared with the laundry but the price is attractive. Lida was very helpful and gives a lots of advices. Good feeling during the 3 days !!
