“Not bad at all!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2011

We stayed at Mama Sara the longest on our organised trip. the beds were comfortable and the staff were friendly. Good location close to laundry service as the hotel service was quite expensive but convienient. Breakfast was fine, better than some places. The hotel can be a little noisy as it echos alot, you can hear everything thats going on so I suggest people be polite when they stay here and try to keep noise to a minimum. Also it can be noisy on the street on weekends so try to get a room towards the back of the hotel. Overall a very pleasant stay!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter but the echo from the loby and stairs you can hear everywhere.

The only unpleasant part of a 2 week vacation in Peru was staying at this hotel. The trip adviser web-site quoted one price in US dollars and yet the hotel tired to charge more per night. Before agreeing to stay, the hotel gave me a lower price but at check out insisted that the rate was higher. One of the managers subsequently confirmed that the price was the lower price. Hotel's print out card in the room states one price for telephone calls but charges a different and higher price at check out. The hotel is very noisy and it is impossible to sleep past 6 a.m. Hotel also uses a conversion rate of charging you more soles (Peruvian money) than the national rate to buy US dollars which is what you need to do in paying your bill.

The staff could have been friendlier, and were generally unhelpful. The breakfast is pretty disappointing compared to elsewhere in the area (sludgy coffee, bits of melon, lots of rolls). The rooms are spacious, clean and have comfortable beds, but are freezing cold at night so we had to have them come up and turn on the radiator every night. Hot water runs out during the peak morning hours, but is plentiful and with good pressure the rest of the time. There is somewhat spotty wi-fi available for free, and 2 computers in the lobby for free. The hotel is walking distance from the town square, but it's a 15 minute walk at a somewhat uphill incline. It's at the VERY end of the street at the edge of the city center before it turns into bus terminals and shacks. There is a rooster in the somewhat open-air dwelling across the street who starts up at 4 am without fail. And a chorus of dogs easily heard through thin walls. Check-out is 930 am, but they'll very graciously push that back to 10:30 if you haggle with them. In short, it's a perfectly adequate hotel and about what you expect for the budget price, but you can probably find better. Also - it's probably WORTH finding a better hotel as you will likely spend more time in your room than you think as you try to acclimatize to the high altitude. Unlike other towns where you probably just sleep in the hotel and plan on hiking and sightseeing all day, you may well want solid sleep and attentive staff for your time in Cusco so you can adjust properly and enjoy the rest of your trip without succumbing to altitude sickness.

A group of us who were mountain biking with Amazonas Explorer (touring company out of Cusco) spent our final days of the adventure at MamaSara Hotel. We really appreciated the great beds, clean crisp linens, neat rooms and public gathering space (the 2nd floor "living room" was nice for our group to share photos on our laptops and meet before dinner.) Our room (104) looked out on a little courtyard - nice & peaceful. Good breakfast. Location was really great, as you could hike up to the ruins, as well as saunter down Calle Saphi to the main plaza. Helpful staff (we had lots of bike boxes to store over the weekend.)

Room Tip: The rooms facing the street were apparently noisy

MamaSara was a very nice hotel with a spacious room, one of the best hotel showers I've experienced and a warm and helpful staff. From the cup of coca tea they provided while checking in to arranging transportation when we required, it was all a very good experience.

We stayed here for three nights prior to our Inca Trail walk and would stay again. The room was a good size with comfortable bed and strong shower. The breakfast was simple but amazing and just what was needed with all the fresh fruit. Finally, the staff were amazing and really helped to make the stay a good one.

It is around 10-15 minutes walk from the main square so if this is a problem, go for somewhere else. It was not a problem for us and the walk felt completely safe. The biggest issue for us was the location of our room at the front of the hotel. There are quite a few buses around as well as other traffic and if we opened the windows the diesel fumes were strong. It was also quite noisy even with the windows closed. All in all, though, if you can get a back room (we didn't ask, and we should have) it is a good value hotel with staff who make you feel very welcome in their city.

Room Tip: At the back!

The Mamasara has a modern design and the rooms are clean, pleasantly decorated and comfortable (if a little minimalist). The hotel can be a little noisy, particularly as the design and decor exacerbates echoes and noise from the central atrium. Street noise can also be a problem. Rooms towards the back of the hotel are quite a lot quieter.
The hotel has Wi-fi in the rooms and public computers and very importantly the rooms have heating, as Cuzco can get cold.
The hotel is located about 10 minutes walk from the main Plaza de Armas and is fairly good value for money.
