We stayed here back in june 2010 for a few days either side of doing our trek to macchu picchu. Not only was the place freezing cold, the showers even colder and the staff had little to no grasp on the english language at all...but as our bags were being so kindly ''looked after'' during our trek, they were actually being sorted thru and small but valuable items being stolen. Beware...your bags will be stored in a room where the night watchman sleeps. The lucky lad knows exactly when your due back after your trek so has plenty of time to go thru things and decide which things can be stolen without drawing too much notice ie. he wont take your laptop but phones and foreign currency are up for the taking. You have been warned!

Well we just got back from Peru and Casa de la Gringa was the worst place we stayed for the whole trip. We like midpriced/budget friendly places to stay - so this was going to be a bit of a splurge for us but it looked interesting. When we arrived the person at the door grudginly let us in. Very little english, the supposedly english speaking south african owner was never there and the rest of the staff cant or wont do anything to help you with questions about the area, tours, or even directions to the Plaza. Worst of all, I booked through an online booker and the staff refused to credit the 10% downpayment to my bill - always claiming instructions from the Duena. Breakfast was ok, eggs but bad bread and no jam or fruit. From what I can tell most people are there for the San Pedro 'experience '(a drug that is legal there but you have to shell out lots of $$), so maybe they don't notice how cold and unfriendly the place is and rude everyone is. Finally - no heat at all anywhere, the place we went to next was less pricey, beautiful, a great locale and had fireplaces in the common room and baseboard heaters to cut the chill.

Hi there, Jan and I have finally moved from the Mirador del Inka to the Casa de la Gringa. Such a relieve to stay at a nice placa again, after a forced 7-day stay at the other place.
The Casa de la Gringa is very relaxed, let go, a bit flower power, and very professional and well organised. People are friendly and it's a place to connect and make new friends.
It is not the cheapest place to stay, but out of experience you'd better not pick the cheapest hostels in Cusco to stay.
Thumbs up!

The hostel is located on the north side of the city, up a hill away from the hustle and bustle of the main plaza, which provides for a quiet nights sleep as well as incredible views of Cusco when you walk just a little bit further up the stairs past the hostel.

The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We spent two nights at the hostel with a trip to Machu Picchu in between and they had no problem holding on to several large bags for us. The kitchen was open for our use, and the hostel always had hot water and coca leaves ready to make tea whenever the altitude or cuisine was effecting us.

The bedroom was very nice, although we were surprised to find only two bathrooms to be shared by the entire hostel. Also, the hostel gets very cold, especially overnight, and despite the beds having as many as five or six wool blankets, my friends and I had trouble sleeping. The cold and the weight of all the blankets made for a pretty uncomfortable situation.

The breakfast was a step up from the typical breakfast included with most stays at a hostel. The fruit salad with yogurt and coconut milk was delicious and a welcome addition to buttered rolls with jam that was the staple at all the hostels.

We stayed here in May of 2008 while vacationing in Peru. It was wonderful. The casa has a very homey and friendly feel to it. Backpackers stay here (or at least they did while we were here) and were out the door much earlier than we were so sharing the bathrooms was no problem at all. Breakfasts are provided and are very good! We scheduled our trip to Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo and Pisac with Simon, who was very helpful. Everything went according to schedule and we had a great time. We will be going back in October of this year and will be staying here again. Can't wait!

Casa de la Gringa was welcoming from the very beginning. Tucked away in a little corner of the hip neighborhood of San Blas, but also only a 5- 10 minute walk to Cusco's center, it was the perfect hostel for me and my week stay in Cusco. The staff is wonderful, breakfast is lovely, the rooms are adorable and Lesley (the owner) rocks. I met amazing people, learned some beautiful things and am certainly one of those who loved the arsty, spiritual vibe goin' on. Also, I stayed alone for the first week and my boyfriend joined me on my trip the last night, which proved Casa de la Gringa suitable not only for solo travelers but couples as well.
