Our trip in May was my second to Cusco and the first one for my friend. I already had in mind to visit WaynaPicchu since I couldn’t do it in my first trip (my kids were too small for such a hike) and it was more than I expected. Maybe it was the anticipation, or maybe it was the hour hike it took to get there, but once I made it I thought the place was even more beautiful than the main citadel, the buildings were constructed in an area that is far steeper, challenging, and surrounded by unmatched views. You will be grateful you made it there, but be mindful that if you are not used to strenuous hikes then this one will challenge you, just take it slowly and don’t over do it.
On the way back you can pretty much follow the same route or you can take the long route. If you decide to take the long route then be aware of endless stairs with narrow steps all the way down, your tights will burn and your legs will cramped... well at least mine did, but we got to visit some structures most people don’t get to see, the temple of the moon is one of them and a number of ruins being overtaken by nature. It was well worth it.

This was the highlight of our Macchu Picchu trip! The climb is difficult, but not impossible and there are railings on the steepest places. Wonderful view of Macchu Picchu from the top and beautiful scenery throughout. It took me about an hour to climb up; my husband took a bit longer due to the altitude.

It was an awesome climb! And it was Not near as physically challenging as the four day Inca Trail. Looks intimidating but it was fairly safe for a 60+ year old (that is in good physical shape). It took my wife & I about 30 to 40 minutes to climb. It had steel cable handrails along the mountain side for many parts of the climb. You should be acclimated to the elevation prior to climbing. And train on hikes and/or stair master. Spectacular views. Worth the climb and price.

first of all machu picchu was amazing, but only can re-entry twice! wayna picchu was amazing too but there were only 2 slot of time 200 people can get inside each time, need to book the ticket before. My slot was 10-11 entry time, so we thought we could spend more time in machu picchu so we reached the entry gate at 11. the guard was telling us that it takes around 1 hour to go to the peak. So we run all the way....some of the hiker couldn't make it to the peak because around 12, the guard on the peak would stop people to go up anymore. be very careful of the steep road. enjoy

1.5 hour climbing up to the top of WaynaPicchu is worth celebrating, and a panoramic view of ManchuPicchu. If you plan to visit MachuPicchu, then make sure you do this challenging climb to WaynaPicchu. You will not regret !
