“Reasonable hotel but beware if you leave your cases”
Reviewed January 27, 2012

The hostal was fine and we enjoyed our stay, but I would caution guests to be careful if you leave your cases in the hostal store. One of our cases was broken into while we were at Machu Picchu and although the manager helped us report it to the police, who were very clear that it was an "inside job". We had to purchase a new case as the police retained our, rather expensive case as evidence.
We were not compensated for this expense which was disappointing as our insurance obviously doesn't cover the entire loss.

Room Tip: Ask for a courtyard room

Really nice hostel and rooms. Clean! Very nice and helpful personal. Location is as well good no more than 10min. walk to Plaza de Armas. First we have stayed in Amaru Hostal (the same hostal chain). We have stayed longer as we planned in Cusco and unfortunately Amaru was booked out so we got offer to stay at Mallqui and I can recommend both of these hostels. Amaru is more expensive with a bit better location and room equipment. Breakfast, free internet... are the same (very good).

Hostal Mallqui is great! They sent a complimentary taxi upon our arrival at the airport to pick us up. The facilities are clean. They provide free internet, free "American" breakfast (1 egg cooked any way, fruit salad, coffee with milk, fresh squeezed orange juice, and fresh baked bread), and free cocoa tea in the lobby. There are also board games in the lobby. Never have stayed in a hostal, I was overwhelmingly surprised at the cleanliness of the entire place.

The only "negative" is that it is not in the center of the plaza, but only four blocks away. And it can get a bit noisy at night, because there are dogs barking all night, but that can be anywhere in the city. And they don't have clocks in the room.

Overall a great hostal with friendly staff!!! I definitely recommend!

Stayed here for a few nights and enjoyed my stay. Apart from a broken toilet the first night the rest was lovely. The staff were friendly and very helpful despite not speaking much English. The rooms were cleaned to a high standard everyday and the free wifi and tea was very much appreciated. Breakfast was plentiful with various drinks, eggs, fruit salad, cereal and bread. The rooms were nice, though sometimes a bit dark, with comfortable beds, decent sized bathrooms and a TV with various satellite channels (including lots of English ones). Overall a very enjoyable stay.

Located 4 blocks from Plaza D'Armas & in a quiet location away from the noise. The hostal has been tastefully decorated & quite modern. Has a lovely courtyard in the middle though they played music from the stereo in the kitchen, and the sound carried through to our room which overlooked the courtyard. They changed our sheets everyday & the staff were pleasant though not all of them spoke English. Breakfast was pretty standard. For $37 a night it is good value.

I only stayed one night at the Mallqui Hostal and it was pleasant enough. The rooms were ok for the price (37USD for a double) but the toilet was very small. Everything else was fine but it was quite noisy. I could hear all conversations taking place anywhere in the hostel from my room and when everyone is waking up at 5 am to go on their tours it is quite annoying. The breakfast service was slightly slow and not plentiful, otherwise it's ok.
