We stayed at the hostel for three nights in November, 2008. The street facade is not special, but when one enters the tall doors and courtyard, it is as if you are in a special world. The white sillar construction material is unique, as is the garden in the back, room with antique-type furniture, and history of the place. The owners a Dutch and Peruvian couple, speak English and Spanish and the breakfasts are good. They were helpful when asked for assistance. On the morning we left early for our flight to Cusco, they arranged for an earlier breakfast for us. All in all, it was a nice place to stay,

We have received a very warm welcome at Casona Solar. The place is an historical house of Arequipa wonderfully renovated and decorated. The bedrooms are large and comfortable. The owner, Edith, is always ready to help and provide info. Don't hesitate if you want to stay there.

My sister, boyfriend and I stayed at Casona Solar for 3 nights in August. We arrived early on the first day and we were able to have an inexpensive breakfast there, though it was not included for this day. The sillar (ashler stone) architecture was a good introduction to this material used all over Arequipa. The sunny courtyard at the back of the hotel was beautiful and a quiet place to relax. Rooms were clean and comfortable. It is within walking distance of the plaza, but not very close. There was no cable and I thought it was a bit overpriced, but the price was reasonable for a restored authentic "casona" in Arequipa. The staff were very friendly. Recommended.

We recently (August 2008) stayed at the Casona Solar for three nights when visiting Arequipa. Unlike several of the other reviewers, our stay was less than optimal.
We booked our room by Internet, communicating (Spanish only) with the delightful owners. We were asked our arrival details at the Arequipa bus station which we provided; a transfer from the station to the hotel is included in the price of lodging. Our bus from Puno arrived right on time and we looked for a placard with our names.
No one showed. We waited 15 minutes and still no one showed. (This was the only place we stayed in Peru where such a thing happened.)
We took a taxi to the hotel and rang the bell. And rang again. And rang again. Our taxi drive suspected no one was home and asked if we had made a reservation. Finally someone answered. We were told that the son (this is a family business) had come to the bus station and we had not seen him. OK. No big deal.
The hotel is lovely but is really quite noisy, despite the best efforts of the owners. You are in center city. The white sillar walls shield the traffic noise to a certain extent, but one cannot expect silence in this location.
Our first two nights were OK. The father of the family who owns the hotel was around, got us our breakfast (we were the only guests!), and answered our quesitions. On our third morning he was not present. After a long wait, breakfast essentially did not happen. We eventually went out (2 doors down) and bought rolls and condiments. The very young daughter (10 years old?) scolded us when we tried to get plates and knives from the bar, made us see through coffee, and let us know we were interfering in her morning. Hmmm.
We paid in cash and left, happy to be free.
I think you can do much better in Arequipa in this price range.

Seven of us stayed here for one night before and one night after our trip to Colca Canyon. Arriving after a very long bus night-long ride from Cusco, we were met by Edith who organized two cabs and we made our way through Arequipa traffic. Casona Solar looks deceptive from the outside...it's a relatively simple, but 18th century building...but you enter through the large doors into first one courtyard, then the breakfast room, and then into a second beautiful courtyard upon which most of the rooms face. It was sunny, with a beautiful little garden at the back. Our rooms (two doubles and a triple) were all immaculately clean and made of the white stone characteristic of Arequipa. It was a quiet respite from the city (though we could hear an enthusiastic soccer game from a nearby stadium one night) and just a few blocks walk to Plaza de Armas.
We'd highly recommend it for a stay in Arequipa.
