“Friendly family run hostel”
Reviewed October 28, 2010

A lovely caring family run this excellent hostel. We were made to feel welcome by staff who spoke English and were most helpful. Central yet quiet location only a short walk from the Plaza des Armes. A large courtyard garden around which the rooms are situated was a welcome retreat to relax in on sunloungers after a day sightseeing. Clean rooms and good breakfast. When we had to change our plans they were most accommodating.

Our stay here started with a very efficient taxi transfer from the airport which Casa de Avila organised for us. Our room was overlooking the courtyard and we could also see the mountains too. We were able to get laundry done for a reasonable cost and they have a tourist information point and person to help - who spoke excellent English. We were able to book our 2D 1N Colca Tour through them which saved trawling around the tour agents in town. One small word of warning if you do book this tour - check which hotel they book for you...if the Colca Inn in Chivay make sure they also book you a heater for the room as their rooms are v v cold! Other than that the tour they booked was great.
From Casa de Avila it's just a short 5-10min walk into central Arequipa down safe, mainly pedestrianised streets. We were happy to walk back in the evening too so no need for taxis. The breakfasts were excellent and there is free internet access too which is v handy. We didn't have any Spanish lessons but they looked fun with lots of groups and individuals sitting in the courtyard during the day. We didn't have any problems with noise and slept very well for our two night stay.

I was disappointed with this hotel only because I booked a twin room (2 x beds) months in advance, and then on arrival I was given a double bed (not a queen, a double) to share between 2 girls and I was exhausted from weeks at altitude.

And the room was dirty, the floor, the walls, and it was immediately above a hall which was noisy when it was full of people (as it was when I arrived in the evening).

The courtyard which is on the website, is in the middle of the complex and looked lovely, but I left to get twin beds somewhere else.

What a great place to stay in Arequipa. Its situated in quite a nice and safe area only 3 blocks from the Plaza de Armas. The rooms are nothing fancy but definately cute and there is a large open green space to relax outside. Security isnt a problem as there is a main gate and anyone entering must pass directly by the main office where there was always someone there. I think the best part of our stay was the service we received from Sandra. She arranged for our room to be ready at 5 AM, she booked us for our Colca Canyon trip, and she arranged for 4M Peru bus transportation from Chivay to Puno. I would definately reccomend Casa de Avila to anyone visiting Arequipa.

This place is great. Quiet, close to town, all rooms surround a peaceful sunny courtyard, breakfast is nice, and the staff are very very friendly. We wouldnt hesitate to reccomend this place to anyone! Arequipa itself is a wonderful city and a place we will definitely return to one day. Thankyou!

Nice rooms;peaceful courtyard; good sunset and volcano views when you get up high. They have a resident tortoise that might just stop by your room. Just a few blocks from the mummy museum and the zocalo, yet quiet. Gate might be locked if you stay out late, but just ring the bell and you will be let back in.

You can book many tours through them; Tried to do both Titicaca and Colca Canyon in a week from there, but with the strikes and all it just wasn't possible. So I decided to book the 2 day Colca Tour with them. It was a great trip; really liked the tour guide the accomodation in Chivay, and what they had to offer. So if you are on a frugal, but not shoestring budget, I think this is a gerat choice for Arequipa.
