My grandparents would take my sister and me on Saturday afternoons, I have good memories at this place. Their food is very traditional and if you go you have to drink "chicha".

You will not find many tourists here and you will not find any English, but you will find well-prepared traditional fare. We shared a table with some locals who gave us excellent recommendations as well as a glass of their chicha! At lunchtime, the place is really busy, but you can usually find a few empty seats. The service is excellent but not elegant. This is not a "fine dining" experience. But, it is a very authentic Picanteria experience.

Being in a self arranged culinary tour, we tried several of the most "touristic" picanterías in Arequipa, most of them really good but almost nothing surprised us... until this place.

We found this place asking for recommendations of where to try the traditional soup called Chaque de Lunes (monday chaque... don't know what does it mean). A bartender in a renowned restaurant told us to go try it in La Capitana.

The place is near the center of the city, almost hidden in a little street. It has a modest entrance and inside the restaurant it feels like a local family dining room (despite it has a lot of tables).

We went just for the soup (our main dishes would be somewhere else), and it was worth it. It had an excellent spicy taste, a great combination of lamb, fried intestines, potatoes, dried potatoes and aji.

Next time will definitely go to have a full meal. Recommended!

PS. incredibly low prices here (look at the menu picture I'm posting)

Make note of the address before you head out to La Capitana, because if you don't know it's there, chances are you won't notice it. A very small, very old sign etched in stone over the door doesn't really draw your attention. The menu is inside the door, rather than on the sidewalk. It's obvious right from the start that La Capitana doesn't really need your business. Once you duck inside the door, the place immediately opens up into a cavernous room full of long shared tables and people. Lots of people. The business of this place is to serve up local food to local people in large amounts. The fact that it is packed to the gills attests that they do it well. In order to enter the large dining room, you walk by the open air kitchen with it's wood fired stoves and rows of clay chicha pots. Menus are posted on the walls and list all of Arequipa's great traditional foods. Chupe de Camerones, Rocoto Rellenos, Pastel de papas are just a few of the old style foods available at this restaurant. Get there early if you want the 8 sole menu of the day. Or order from the menu if you miss out on the special. But do get there. It's not to be missed.
