“Delightful place to stay but front desk a little aloof.”
Reviewed November 8, 2010

This hotel within walking distance of Arequipa centre is a delight to stay in. Beautiful old building with courtyards and gardens. Good buffet breakfast attended by friendly staff. Only criticism would be that the front desk staff feel they are a little above your average traveller in attitude. Not a reason to avoid the hotel though.

This hotel provides a great value. The rooms are special with old, brick arched ceilings. Lovely courtyards & a beautiful garden provides the perfect spot for breakfast. The location was conconvenient for walking to all the sights we wanted to see. No, the reception desk spoke little English, but we are in a Spanish speaking country & not at an upscale hotel. All the employees with whom we came in contact were very nice.

No frills here, large cavernous rooms without a view. cool at night. great little courtyard full of flowers. Simple breakfast of eggs and soya, quinoa - we went out for a second one in Arequipa, which has the finest chocolate in the world. Our only problem was the recption staff spoke little English which would have not mattered had we not lost our luggage and needed to communicate with the airport. In an attempt to be nice, the receptionist kept telling us cheery but wrong information about progress on the lost luggage front ! The usual English problem of not knowing enough Latin American Spanish so you can hardly blame the hotel.

We were looking for a nice place at a good price and we found it! This hotel is one of a kind and the atmosphere and architecture is amazing. I would suggest asking for a large double room (if you are looking for a double) we stayed in 2 different rooms and the second (room #105) was much larger than the first. Each room has it's unique touch and wonderful colonial design. Bright colors, arched ceilings, and traditional Peruvian decor. Breakfast is good (eggs, toast, fruit, coffee). Book in advance it fills up quickly.

I stayed here during my trip to Peru. This hotel looks nothing from the outside but is like a Tardis on the inside, the rooms are charming and individual, the breakfast is good.

My wife and I stayed at Melgar for a couple days while we were in Arequipa and had a pleasant time. Our room was large, clean and quiet towards the back of the hotel. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. It had a very charming nature to the hotel due to the age of the building. A more modern breakfast area near the courtyard in the back serves up a healthy breakfast of eggs, granola, fruit and tea. Wifi was available and could be used from our room.

The Monasterio de Santa Catalina is very close and a great way to spend part of a day. Also, the Museo de la Universidad Catolica de Santa Maria has a frozen/mummified Incan girl on display is quite interesting. Las Quenas has some good food and live music that should be checked out.
