“Beautiful building and grounds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014

Charming mansion turned into a hotel with beautiful gardens. The rooms are large and have lots of character. Breakfasts are average. The hotel is just a few blocks from the main plaza and close to many good restaurants.

This hostal surprised me. Entering through a very modest doorway into the small reception area, it comes as something of a shock to walk through tree shaded colonial-style courtyards, up stairs or through the pretty and tidy gardens to your sillar-walled room.
The rooms themselves are relatively spartan, but with comfortable beds, spotlessly clean bathroom, cable, LCD TV, and phone and pleasant amounts of wood and brass, they're perfectly adequate. Not only this but given how large this hostal is - I must've walked though 4 or 5 separate small courtyards and the garden to get to some of the furthest reaches of the place - you can be fairly sure that you won't be bothered by the terrible traffic of Arequipa. In fact this is one of the few places in the centre of the city where you can hear birdsong. However, you can also hear the nearby discos on Thu/Fri/Sat in some rooms, so make sure you get a room that willl be insulated from the noise if it may bother you - I think the southern side would be best,
Service in general was excellent and the staff friendly and amenable.
Breakfast was very good. A buffet-style meal served in an area behind glass/perspex looking out onto the garden.
Charming, quite frankly. When I next return to Arequipa I'll be staying here

We arrrived in Arequipa on a beautiful sunny morning after having spent the overnight on the Cruz del Sur bus from Nazca. Even though it was early we had no problem checking in, maybe also due to the low season in december. Rooms are so full of character, decorated with a lot of colonial accents. Breakfast was simple but tasty, like in all our peruvian hotels. What was really special was it's location on the side of one of the hotel's lovely inner gardens. We spent a couple of hours resting in the garden, enjoying the sun, listening to the birds singing and catching up on the world using the wi-fi.

I loved this place, the rooms were all different lots of antiques and the halls and courtyards ooze charm and a historic ambiance. The gardens are beautiful, the staff friendly. The only compliant is the room smelled a little musty.

We've stayed at La Casa de Melgar three times now, in 2009, in 2011, and now this year. My husband, a university professor, has brought a different group of students each time. with essentially the same itinerary. I've stayed on an extra day for the past two times, as Arequipa and this hostal have become favorites of mine.

Each time I've been thrilled by the charming ambiance of this historic spot. The rooms are very different from one another, with lovely short strolls through the courtyards and gardens to reach the various parts of the hostal. Breakfast is simple, but fresh and plentiful, and it's a delight to eat looking out at the abundant gardens. Today I had an especially tricky situation for checking in with an airline; Lidia, the staff person at the front desk at that time, took care of it with great patience and thoroughness. Everyone who works here makes you feel welcome!

My wife and I stayed there on our honeymoon. We were both very taken by the beauty of this rustic villa. The breakfast food itself was good but not impressive. However, the breakfast area looks out into a beautiful little garden of big flower bushes that attracts hummingbirds and other cute little animals. The rooms are rustic but in the best possible way. I'd definitely recommend staying there.

It has courtyards and an interesting structure, tasty breakfast, and is a peaceful retreat from the city. We loved our room off in a little corner of a courtyard where we heard birds chirping merrily each morning. The style is eclectic.

Shower water was hot and plentiful. Wifi worked fine.

The breakfast was a buffet of fruit, yogurt, puffed quinoa, juice, coffee and tea and then eggs made to order. It is served on a patio but there's a nice garden also where you can enjoy green grass and sunshine while you eat.

The hotel was convenient to walk around Arequipa. We didn't interact much with staff other than them buzzing the door open for us when we came in and out so I don't have any opinion on whether they are good/bad/indifferent.
