Beautiful city, centre has small, cafe bar type feel to it in beautiful colonial setting, if you are interested in museum, churches and history there are enough here too keep you going for months.. steeping in real history from Incas and other cultures.. then come the church in 1570 odd with the Spanish, I hate what thye church did in Peru and all South and Cenral America, Cross in one hand sword in the other, and plenty gold from the invaders.. However they built beautiful houses, churches.. Monestario de Santa Catalina is a must see and I love Casa Moral.. I was in Chile and came up to Arequipa planning to stay a night or two end stay 4 months many othersw the same people love this town ..good mix of local people and backpacker in centre rarely trouble out.. Got a really good bar, coffeshop and restaurant culture.. people are friendly here its a big city but a samll town centre feel to it

Check out Wayra River hostel for accomodation, good prices lovely people, relaxed, nce company in evening chilled.. about 12 hours from Cusco by nightbus.. Cruz del Sur or Oltursa I think, Puno lake Titiccaca night trip away, Colca Canyon 2nd deepest Caqnnon in world the deepest one is just beside it) I never heard of Arequipa till I bought a bus ticket there, Perhaps my favourite city!

Surrounded by Volcanas and Andes at 6000Metres which you can climb... Town is 3000 meters above sea level, from June to Oct it never rained and was 25 to 28 everyday sunny.. it rains in Jan and Feb i think a lot

Lovely central square; beautiful gardens; romantic, arched balconies all around Plaza de Armas; lots of options on places to exchange currency; many quaint gallerias to shop for interesting souvenirs; nice restaurants/bars to have drinks, but I never found one with great food—and Arequipa is loaded with restaurants that have great food. For that, go along Santa Catalina and San Francisco streets.

Spacious square dominated by large cathedral. Internal building work meant the famous altar and pulpit were covered. Floodlit exterior very impressive

Here you find everythting from shops to restaurants, churches and booking agence. Yet you never get the feeling to be in a huge city. Everthing is no clean, no skyscrapers, the old buildings reused in the inside but yet gorgeous on the outside. Traffic is a bit heavy, but due to the small allees you hardly notice as a pedestrian.
It's a nice stroll and if you got errands you can get it all done as well.
