“Reliable hot water and clean rooms make up for thin walls!!”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

Point of view: we'd been traveling and gotten sick but had booked at a hotel in Arequipa with no hot water! After 2 days there we found this place by chance because it's related to cacique. And cacique was booked up.

Pros:
Reliable hot water
Gorgeous views of el misti and the city from rooftop terrace
Small kitchen that is accessible to make tea, soup, eggs, etc
Wifi is speedy
Fast computer in lobby as well
2 min walk from plaza San Francisco and 5 min to plaza de armas.

Cons:
Thin walls
No tv in our room

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in August 2012. We found the room to be clean and the location excellent. I am vegetarian and there were 3 good veggie restaurants in the area. Best one is Lakshimivan. Good hospitality. Owners went out of their way to help. Computer in lobby and WiFi. Great rooftop area with incredible view. Quiet place for an afternoon beer.

My partner and I have stayed in a lot of hostels in Peru and we are not normally picky but this place was rather disappointing. We chose it because of the reviews from this website but we wish we had booked somewhere else. We booked a double room with a private bathroom. The floor of the room was absolutely filthy it was like a barefoot sand bar, the double bed was SO uncomfortable and we only managed to get hot water at night. One afternoon we went back to the hostel to pick up an item but there were no staff around to let us in. The only way to get inside is to ring a bell and wait for a staff member to unlock the door (this is standard at most Peru hostels). We rang the bell several times and waited 15 minutes then gave up. When we went to check out the next morning at 8.30am, again there were no staff around. We rang the desk bell and waited 15 minutes. In the end we had to leave to catch a taxi to the airport so we left a note and Soles on the desk, when we were getting into the taxi one of the staff was walking back to the hostel probably thinking we were leaving without paying. The location is fine but for the price (no breakfast included) you can definitely find a much better option! We wouldn't recommend.

If you're on a budget but want a great place to stay in Arequipa, come here! We've had excellent friendly service from both father and son Jose, nothing too much trouble, and our rooms were better than we expected for the price. Instead of a dorm, we had a firm, comfy mattress in our matrimonial room with private bathroom for 20-25 soles each. Whenever we had a shower it was hot and there was lots of space to move around, plus no unnerving electrics hanging out like some places.
Everywhere in the hostel is clean that we could see, and the location was very convenient - about 4 blocks from the Plaza de Armas with lots of tour operators, restaurants, mini-markets within one block's walk. The rooms all seem to have curtained windows onto the corridors, and we could hear someone playing guitar in another room when the window was open, but as soon as we shut the window it was quiet.
There is a small kitchen which was important to us as we are on a budget and are vegan and we enjoyed being able to make our own coffee and porridge in the mornings. The oven wasn't working while we were there (hobs were fine), but the veggie restaurants in the city are so good and plentiful we ate out the rest of the time anyway!
There is a cool, tiled communal area by the front door with computers to use, sofas and a couple of dining tables with stools, and a tv, but the best place to sit is outside on the rooftop terrace with an awesome view of the skyline including El Misti - we recommend sitting here to watch the sunset with a beer in hand.
All the staff were super friendly. Jose Senior gave us all sorts of info about tours, including tipping us to great deal for the Colca Canyon trek. We had fun chats in Spanish and English Jose Junior (whenever he wasn't running back and forth to help other guests) while we waited for our evening bus - it was fine for us to stay in the common area and use the kitchen for an extra 7hrs after check-out.
And lastly, we had great internet connection both in our room on the 2nd floor and then on the ground floor when we came back from our trek - enough to Skype and play computer games without problem - a refreshing change.
The only downside I can think of is that the book exchange only had a dodgy airport thriller in English (but I took it anyway). The hostel is quite new, I think only a year or two old but is building an excellent reputation. We don't always take the time to review our hostels, but we wanted to help out this place as they were so good to us.
Enjoy your stay!

We arrived at 7am after a night bus and Jose already had our room prepared and told us to relax and get some sleep before we did anything else. A very welcoming and friendly hostel in a good central location. Hot water 24hrs a day. Jose also recommended a great tour company for the Colca Canyon. Plus it has a roof terrace with amazing views of Misti and the city.

The two Joses (father and son) do a great job in this hostel! They treat you as good old friends and make you feel at home. The room was cosy with a comfy bed and a large window, as well as enough hooks to hang your things on (something we often miss in other hostels). The bathroom has a great hot shower! On the rooftop is a terrace – a good place to chill out. The location of the hostel is perfect: just ten minutes to the main plaza. If you want to go to the Colca Cañon individually, Jose knows a good possibility for transport, just ask him!

The hostel is prob the best option you can find.

Very hot water for showers. Some rooms have cable TV and the internet is fast.

The owner does everything to make your stay nice. Dont be shy to ask anything. He also recommends good agencies for tours or transport and does not recommend expensive LP agencies.

Go to this hostel if you want good value for your money!
