“Great hospitality!”
Reviewed July 7, 2012

The two Joses (father and son) do a great job in this hostel! They treat you as good old friends and make you feel at home. The room was cosy with a comfy bed and a large window, as well as enough hooks to hang your things on (something we often miss in other hostels). The bathroom has a great hot shower! On the rooftop is a terrace – a good place to chill out. The location of the hostel is perfect: just ten minutes to the main plaza. If you want to go to the Colca Cañon individually, Jose knows a good possibility for transport, just ask him!

The hostel is prob the best option you can find.

Very hot water for showers. Some rooms have cable TV and the internet is fast.

The owner does everything to make your stay nice. Dont be shy to ask anything. He also recommends good agencies for tours or transport and does not recommend expensive LP agencies.

Go to this hostel if you want good value for your money!

We were recommended Kuraka from our hostel in Cusco and it was a good choice. The rooms were decent size, well priced and the owner was very hospitable.
We stayed 2 nights in a double on the 3rd floor - as mentioned below the showers here are good (not that electric style favoured in these areas) although hot water wasnt always consistent. We were supposed to have cable tv in this room but it wasnt available on the 3rd floor. My wife then stayed in a single room while I trekked the colca canyon and then when I returned we had a similar double room on the 2nd floor (with cable tv but the remote and most of the buttons didnt work haha).
The posada has wi-fi which was generally fast and a shared computer that was very quick. There is a small communal kitchen which was handy and breakfast was an optional extra.
The owner Jose is a friendly guy and amusingly his father (also Jose) accused him of being crazy as he speaks so much but then I couldnt get a word in with Jose snr either so obviously an amusing trait that runs in the family. Rosa who also worked there was very nice (no English).
The posada also has a very nice terrace on the top floor with awesome views of Misti and Colchani - a great place to wile away the afternoon.
Location was good - about 5 blocks to the main square and on a block between the 2 major tourist streets.

I found this by walking the street and knocking and was pleasantly surprised. The guy at reception is a gem.

The bed was comfortable, clean, the room was ensuite.

Water hot, and not an electric shower (better). There is a small kitchen (free). A terrace on the roof and small common area for eating.

Its more in the hotel style but with a kitchen.

I have stayed in 5 five hostels in Arequipa and this has been the best. Its not pefect but at the 30 soles I paid represents excellent value for someone looking for a quiet, and well located place to sleep.

We were directed to this hostel by an owner of another one we had picked and we did not regret for a moment! We were hosted by Senor Jose and his son Hose Junior - both are great and extremely hospitable. We stayed for 3 nights (not in a row) and each time we could safely leave our luggage and we could use toilets and kitchen even after checking out! Fast working internet was another advantage. It was the nicest hostel we stayed at in Peru during our 1 month journey.

We had a lovely time staying in La Posada and can highly recommend it to anyone. That being said, this hostel has a few minor down sides which should be considered.

By far the major selling point for this hostel is it's owner, Jose. He tries very hard to make you feel welcome, and is an invaluable source of information about Arequipa. He recommended us a restaurant and a travel agency and both recommendation were great. The rooms themselves are small but get the job done and are good value for money.

As for the downsides, there are a few. First of all the warm water is not 100% consistent. Sometimes we had great, hot water sometimes we had a meager lukewarm trickle of water. Also the rooms are not cleaned during your stay unless you request this, keep it in mind. Overall though the positives outweigh the negatives so if you are looking for a cheap hostel that offers great value for money you can not go wrong with this one.
