“Bedbugs”
Reviewed January 19, 2011

We stayed in a double room with private bathroom for s/.50, which initially seemed to be good with both a TV and a fridge in the room. However, after the first night we woke up with a number of bites. We inspected the mattress and found a few bedbugs. When we told the owner, he naturally said that there had never been a case of bedbugs before in the hostel. We insisted that we move rooms, which he agreed to, and we also asked him to wash all of our clothes to avoid spreading the bedbugs. After some persuasion eventually agreed to do this free of charge, although obviously it was in his interest. We also spent the afternoon scrubbing and cleaning all our bags before moving to the new room.

Meanwhile, much to our disbelief, the owner swept out our old room, turned the infested mattress, changed the sheets and then gave the room to new unsuspecting guests. He also implied that the clothes which were being washed were really dirty (even though they had just been laundered at our previous accommodation), therefore, implying either that we were trying to get our clothes washed for free or that we were the source of the bedbugs, neither of which were true.

On the rest of the hostel, the kitchen is quite a small space, so difficult for more than one person to cook at once. There are two gas rings which are also broken and as such, rather hazardous. The tea towels in the kitchen were also pretty disgusting and never seemed to get washed. The owner seemed to be more concerned with protecting the table tops (by distributing place mats to everyone) than with providing decent cooking utensils.

Quite good hostel in center of Arequipa. Owner didn't communicate by email, but reservation by system worked. There wasn't problem to stay longer there also keeping our baggage while we hiked in Colca canyon. We stayed in double room with bathroom on the roof - nice.

+perfect location in center (10min to Plaza de Armas by foot)
+nice terrace on the roof with view to El Misty
+kitchen available
+safe
+PC with free internet
+enough of hot water (by central gas heater)
+you can talk about price (my was 36PEN/night - official table presents 50)
+room was warm and sunny
-no breakfast
-out room on the roof was noisy (car-horns from the street)

Santa Catalina hostel is a beautiful old house with comfortable rooms, reliable hot showers, free wi-fi (though just one station), a kitchen, safe storage room, laundry service and a good location. Senor Lucho was very pleasant and helpful, he got us a good deal for the Colca Canyon 3 day trek, provided maps and good recommendations, let us use the storage room even when we were not staying there anymore... Highly recommended.

I turned up without a reservation but was still able to get a room. Normally this would be a bad sign but everything the website claims to deliver was provided.
There was hotwater in the showers, the rooms and bathrooms were always clean.

There is a nice patio at the top of the building which is great for sitting out and chilling. The kitchen on the ground floor is available to be used. There is also a courtyard on the ground floor to sit out in. The internet connection is perfectly usable.
The owners allowed me to store my large rucksack when I went away for 3 days on a trek to Colca Canyon and upon my return were quite happy for me to take a shower before leaving Arequipa despite the fact I wasn't going to stay in the hostal anymore. The owner even helped me find a taxi to the bus station.
The staff were always pleasant to deal with even when I woke up the man on the night shift at 3am to store my luggage as I departed for my trek.

The only small downside to this hostal is that there is a bit of noise early hours of the morning with people going off on their treks as all the rooms face the inner courtyard and also around 6.30am when the traffic starts to build up outside the hostal as being South America, the drivers like to sound their horns at every opportunity! This wouldn't stop me staying here again or recommending this hostal. It provides exactly what it claims to do at a fair price.
