Located in a colonial house, this beautiful hostal is just 2 blocks from the Santa Catalina Monastery, inside the touristic area of Arequipa and a 10 minute walk from the main square.
The warm atmosphere and friendly staff with Rodolfo taking care of business makes you feel at home immediately. It got excellent views from the roof terrace over town and the mighty Misty Volcano.
It got a cafeteria with free use of the well equipped kitchen. The reception area with a huge tv screen, comfortable sofas, free use of computers and a bookexchange is a popular hang-out place. There are 16 rooms, 10 with shared bathroom and 6 with a private one. WiFi in the rooms, as well as cable tv and 24 hours hot water. Laundry service and a storage of your luggage are amongst organizing tours to the Colca Canyon a few more examples of the level of service from this pleasant place.

Room Tip: Also the rooms at the side of the street are quiet because of an extra window.

The rooms come with a tv, fridge, and hot shower. Its obviously not luxury but defintely acceptable for the price. I had one of the rooms facing the street and there was a glass pane through the window to try to reduce the noise. It is a busy street out front but I was able to sleep, as I had an early colca canyon tour. The owner was helpful and friendly and got up early to store my lugage for the day. I was able to use the facilaties and shower in the public bathroom prior to my overnight bus. Internet worked well.

Bedbugs in our room... not many, but all it takes is a few to start an infestation.

The hostel itself would not have been overall acceptable for the cost (30S for a huge matrimonial room with shared bath).
There is a nice rooftop and free fast WiFi (which was switched off at midnight)
Hostal Santa Catalina has small kitchen for guest use and a dining area that doubles as tour agency and reception.

Note that the building is right in the corner of a very busy intersection, hence you will be entertained by the non-stop honking of cars and minibuses from morning early to evening late.

We would have stayed longer if it wasn’t for the bedbugs

We stayed in a double room with private bathroom for s/.50, which initially seemed to be good with both a TV and a fridge in the room. However, after the first night we woke up with a number of bites. We inspected the mattress and found a few bedbugs. When we told the owner, he naturally said that there had never been a case of bedbugs before in the hostel. We insisted that we move rooms, which he agreed to, and we also asked him to wash all of our clothes to avoid spreading the bedbugs. After some persuasion eventually agreed to do this free of charge, although obviously it was in his interest. We also spent the afternoon scrubbing and cleaning all our bags before moving to the new room.

Meanwhile, much to our disbelief, the owner swept out our old room, turned the infested mattress, changed the sheets and then gave the room to new unsuspecting guests. He also implied that the clothes which were being washed were really dirty (even though they had just been laundered at our previous accommodation), therefore, implying either that we were trying to get our clothes washed for free or that we were the source of the bedbugs, neither of which were true.

On the rest of the hostel, the kitchen is quite a small space, so difficult for more than one person to cook at once. There are two gas rings which are also broken and as such, rather hazardous. The tea towels in the kitchen were also pretty disgusting and never seemed to get washed. The owner seemed to be more concerned with protecting the table tops (by distributing place mats to everyone) than with providing decent cooking utensils.
