This hostel provides huge rooms, beautiful terraces, laundry service, excellent breakfast services and staff. Rooms and bathrooms were well kept and always clean. The wifi signal was and connection was good for Peru. The hostel was about a 10 minute walk to the city centre and located across the street from a police station.

Negatives
- shower didn't always drain properly
- slippery floors even with good shoes on

Overall this hostel is a bit pricey but worth every penny.

Arequipa: Arequipa is a beautiful city, one of the most beautiful in Peru and definitely worth a visit even if you don't go to the Colca Canyon. There is the Monastario De Santa Catalina and Inca Museum with Juanita (The best preserved Inca sacrifice displayed from April - December with other mummified bodies replacing her January - March) and good tours in English by local Uni students. A good supermarket, El Super, can be found off the main square and there's a nice high street with familiar brands.

Hostel Positives:
+ Clean rooms and bathrooms which are quiet at night and have daily room service.
+ A good breakfast. The normal; roll, tea/coffee, juice but with scrambled eggs for free.
+ Good location. Opposite a police station and a few minutes walk into the centre of town.
+ Wifi and cable TV in the rooms.

Hostel Negatives:
- We arrived at Arequipa's bus station and had to get our own taxi after they said they wouldn't arrange one for us.
- Our toilet's flush was constantly trickling throughout the night like it never quite finished flushing.
- The floor tiles outside are really clean and look great but I can see it being REALLY slippery after rainfall. Tread carefully.
- Considering it's a hostel we didn't see anywhere to cook your own food.

Would I recommend it to friends: Yes.

I booked my first night in Arequipa here, and just kept rolling my stay over for 6 days all up. They stored my backpack while I was in the canyon for 3 days.
Want secure? It's across the street from the central police station. Close to plaza de atmas, santa catalina and the top of san francisco where there is a lot of nightlife.
Rooms are fantastic, with good beds and bathrooms. Very quiet, and lovely courtyard. Good breakfast, and supermarket 3 blocks away.
The staff are absolutely fantastic - the same 4 run the place around the clock. I was even recommended a place for queso helado (s1.50 for a cup in an old hole-in-the-wall).
For the price, hostal santa marta is imho unbeatable.

Compared to many hostels this is more like a hotel. We had to stay a bit longer in Arequipa than expected following a dog bite and checked in here for three nights so we could relax in comfort. It's really near the centre and good value for money, yet it wasn't busy when we stayed so when we asked for a double room they gave us a room that sleeps five all to ourselves (3 single beds & a double) plus a sofa, TV and an ensuite bathroom.

It was nice and quiet at night and the breakfast was OK - slightly different each day. The staff were friendly and we would definitely stay there again. If you want to meet lots of other backpackers, this probably wouldn't be the best place though.

We stayed in a triple room which was large and spacious and clean. Bathroom was a bit small, but had all the necessities which were clean and hot showers. Breakfast was fine - very simple with bread, juice, and tea. No eggs though. Staff were friendly. Location was great - just a few minutes walking to the central plaza. Lots of restaurants nearby. We asked to store our luggage for the afternoon, and they told us to leave our bags in the front reception area behind the couch - not a secure place, but they had someone at the reception desk all the time, so it was safely waiting for us when we got back. Overall, pretty satisfied by our stay here.

Santa Marta was a great spot in Arequipa. In total we spent 5 nights here and it was a great value with eggs and real coffee and juice for breakfast! the beds were comfortable and our room was cleaned every day and the whole hostel was very clean.

This place is simple and a real pleasure.
