“Great service and trustworthy guide”
Reviewed November 13, 2013

We used Carlos Zarate tours for a personal guided climb of el volcan Misti in Sept 2012. We found their service to be extremely professional and, most of all, experienced. We were very impressed by how many times they had made the trek and how easily the "helpers" who carried all our gear to the camping site on the first day, made multiple trips and hopped up and down the volcano with ease while we struggled with altitude to do the minimum. They provided us with top quality gear, set up and broke down our camp, cooked us a hot dinner and breakfast (which, honestly, at that altitude you can hardly appreciate as eating is NOT easy, but it was nice they tried!). We got a late start on day 1 due to some minor car trouble they had, so we were still walking when the sun dropped behind the volcano and the temperature dropped - but the guys went through our backpacks (they'd taken ahead to the camp site) and brought us back warm layers since they knew we would freeze otherwise. The climb was incredibly difficult, and being healthy but not conditioned or trained, we climbed slower than most. Our guide was no cheerleader or emotional motivator- he was mostly mute and often mentioned "This is how far some/most people get..." quite often to slightly nudge us toward turning back, since we were taking too long. However, he let us continue trying since we weren't giving up (he also was in on my then-boyfriend's plan to propose at the summit so I think he gave us an extra grace period) and we did finally make it to the top. Since it was so late, we had to race down (beating the sunset was crucial) and at one point he got out of our sight and we had to stop and whistle until he realized he'd lost us and returned to show us the way (getting down is just as risky/scary as climbing since there is no obvious path!). Other than that one brief lapse, we felt he guided us with utmost confidence, knew the volcano extremely well, he helped us navigate the ice/snow when necessary, and we were never in danger. We did regret following their suggestions about how much water to bring - we'd planned for more but they told us to leave it in the car as it was too much...ended up we ran out shortly before the summit, and were very dehydrated on the trip down (the guide kept telling us - eat chocolate, it goes straight to your legs! But we would rather have had water!) but one of the guys came running to bring us water for our last 1/2 hour stretch toward the car which was also very nice. Without such excellence, I'm sure we wouldn't have made it to the top and wouldn't have had the amazing memorable proposal experience we did. We were very glad we chose this tour provider for our trip.

“El Misti Trek and Colca Canyon Tour”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Guides were very good and experienced for El Misti ascent, however they did not understand the concept of team spirit not allowing some individuals who had taken the lead to wait for those behind them. "Breakfast" was poor and insufficient, for a 7-hour walk up the mountain we were given stale bread and jam and coca tea.
Another downside includes that our climbing team was rushed to allow them to meet the next group who were doing the climb. Some of us were unable to keep up with this pace, therefore, unfortunately, did not complete the ascent.

Our tour guide for Colca Canyon was knowledgable of the Canyon and culture of Peru, which would have been good enough if we had just paid the original $600, however, upon arrival (after a 3-hour bus ride) we were told there was an additional $400 to be paid for entrance to the Canyon, which the office failed to tell us about. We, as a group, felt that this tour was not good value for money. The Hot Springs were enjoyable and so was seeing the large Condors. For the money we paid, we were disappointed that there was no viewpoint to witness a breathtaking view of the entire Canyon as it advertised to be the second biggest Canyon in the world. Furthermore, breakfast again was insufficient and unsatisfactory.

Hay Guias de Montaña drasticos, que prefieren ignorar a los que se entrenan y hacen volver a todo el grupo, solo para mantener lo que excusan " El espiritu de grupo";

“Chachani Tour with Carlos Zarate”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

Read in many travel books that Carlos Zarate Adventures is one of the best travel agencies in Arequipa so we booked the hiking up to Chachani trough this agency.

The staff in the office is very helpful and funny. They give you all the details you need and I felt very welcomed. If you are a group they give you great discounts.

The Equipment they give you is very old and absolutely not good in shape. Our tour guide had just limited english skills, basic spanish is an advantage.

I never hiked over 6000 meters above sealevel and had no idea that I suffer from altitude sickness. Unfortunately I had to vomit but the guide just ignored me and said "vamos vamos". It is a very dangerous illness and in my opinion the guide should care about the guests.

My friend had just trekking shoes but the lady in the office told him that he won't have problems and he can hike up. Unfortunately he had to return to the base camp about 300 meters under the summit because he couldn't feel his toes anymore. Had in the end the impression that they just want to make money and do not really care about the guests.. :(

Saludos Carlos Zarate

Carlos Zarate Adventures is the best agency you could have in Arequipa! You don't need to be equipped because you can rent everything you need! The guide, Julio, was very good, professional, always caring for our safety and willing to share his knowledge with us. We climbed "El Misti" and it was the best experience ever!!!

“Professional and exciting trip.”
Reviewed November 26, 2011

Did the downhill Chichani trip with the Zarate crew. Trip was a bit pricey for Peru standards but the staff was very knowledgeable and overall trip was fun and challenging. One of the best ways to see the beautiful Arequipa landscapes. Guides were friendly and understanding about varying skill levels and made me feel comfortable with my lack of biking experience.
